Anyone know of a mailorder place with good prices to get caddy's for the
Toshiba 3401B?

Based on a tip I got in this forum, I got a catalog from an outfit called
Walnut Creek CDROM. Their Sony-compatible caddy, which is the one used in the
Toshiba 3401 is $4.95 each, with a shipping fee (per order, I guess) of $5.00.

Also, I saw an ad in the April 12 issue of PC Week magazine for an outfit
called DB Products that said they have caddies. They didn't give a price.

you using/planning to use?

Thanks for the info on the caddy's — no I don't have my 3401 yet – I'm about
to buy a whole new system and plan to get this included. I'm going to use the
Adaptec 1742 SCSI EISA SCSI controller – it seems to be used by the big guys
like DIGITAL who can't afford support headaches….

My clone dealer says he will upgrade my 486 ISA motherboard with an EISA one
for $150. I'll have to decide fast before I buy my SCSI adapter. The reason
I'm wondering is I see some board makers coming out with their EISA cards
before introducing their ISA ones. Hmmm…
Maybe there is some hope for Adaptec support. I was told that a fellow from
Adaptec, John Lloyd (70714-3214) hangs out in the IBMHW forum. I've already
left him a note. I hope it's for real.

Good luck with the 1742, I have one of those in a Gateway EISA system. Adaptec
is a real pain to try to work with. They don't support the Thoshiba 3401B with
their EZSCSI product and the 1742 isn't supported by CorelSCSI. I finally gave
up and hooked the 3401B to the SCSI port on the PAS16 sound board, works fine.

Robert, I beg to differ. I have the Toshiba 3401, and the adaptec 1740/2 Board.
EZSCSI can be used temporarily by adding /norst to the end of the driver line
(not in multisession). CorelSCSI definitely is supported, and in multisession.
Corel says it's still testing the combo so they won't guarantee compatibility,
but trust me, the latest version (I think it's 1.1 is the one. Older version
doesn't. ) I've been using the 1740/CorelSCSI/3401 combo with Kodak Photo Edge,
and all other cd-roms for a month or two, no problem. Phil

I have a 3401 that I am currently using with an Ultrastor 24F EISA SCSI
controller. The two work well together. I also just purchased 10 caddies from
Walnut Creek, and they were nice to deal with.

Walnut Creek was excellent to deal with. I asked them to FedEx the caddies to
me, but due to a mess-up they didn't send my order out until a day later. So
they adjusted their bill downward by $10, which is more then fair!
