I forgot the context, Matthew, sorry. Too many messages and replies and the
original context message is gone now.
Reinstalling Windows is a pain in the rear but it's sometimes a good idea
to do it occasionally anyway. I reinstalled Windows when I added a second hard
drive and discovered, even after putting back all my GRP and INI files, that I
suddenly had about 25 more megabytes of disk space than I had before! Windows
and Windows programs strow a ton of little useless debris all over the place,
most of which you never dare omit because you don't know what they are.
The pain's not just from reinstalling Windows, it's from reinstalling all
those drivers (sound board, video, etc.) as well. I have it much easier–I have
a Windows on CD ROM that wasn't a commercial product–and it's a shame
MicroSoft doesn't just put out a full-blown WIN31 on CD. Makes reinstalling and
changing things much easier….

I worry a bit about reinstalling Windows. I suppose I'd have to save
all of my .ini files or the various apps I've installed wouldn't work right.
Where'd you come up with a Windows 3.1 on CD-ROM?

Yes, I write science fiction for a living (see Lynne's comments earlier in
this section).
The Windows on CDR was from a beta test I participated in. It's great and I
wish MS would offer it commercially.
You need to save your GRP and INI files. On the other hand, I find when I
need to do a complete reinstall I install it "virgin;" all you need to do is
make sure that your PATH in no way refers to the old WIN's existence. I often
discover that this is a nice way of getting rid of all those programs I have
saddled to Windows that I somehow never use but never get around to getting rid
of….

Jack, my SBPro kit came with Windows on CDROM, along with the SBPro drivers,
plus some sound tracks. Disc is labeled, "Sound Blaster Multimedia Upgrade Kit
Master Disc with Microsoft Windows 3.1." Also comes with an OEM version of the
Windows manual.
I don't know if Creative Labs would sell the disc separately from the drive
though.

I don't think CL is licensed by MS to sell that disk separately, but I've
seen several similar multimedia upgrade CDs. Sure makes adding a new driver or
changing one thing a lot simpler, doesn't it?
What I'd like to see is MicroSoft simply offer WIN31 on CD ROM for a simple
fee. That would make a lot of people's lives simpler.
