#NComm Problem

Since recently I own a SupraFaxModem V.32bis. It came together with NComm 2.0.
I have tried to download files from CompuServe, but had no success so far. I am
new to modems, comms, CompuServe, etc., so it may well be a simple
configuration or handling problem. This is what happens: The download requestor
tells me that it is receiving binary data :-), but it tells me also that the
very first block is erroneous :-(. After 10 attempts the downloading is
cancelled. I suspect that the modem setup is incorrect. Can somebody help me to
fix this problem, or to point me in the right direction, please?

First – are your serial settings 8 bits, No parity, 1 stop bit? You
cannot download 8-bit binary data unless you are set for 8 bits.
Second – are you using CompuServe B protocols? Be sure your term program
and CompuServe are set up to use the same protocols, and B protocols as
the best for CompuServe.
If neither of these is the problem, let us know and we'll look further.

Thanks for your reply. I have just completed my first download successfully 🙂
My mistake: I had to set the "character set to be used" to "UK7". Unfortunately
the library for CompuServe-B was not supplied with my release, so I have to use
YMODEM. Thanks again for your advise.

Get the XPRQuickB or XPRBPlus library — using YModem will take 2-3 times
longer than necessary.

XPRBPlus.library is an Amiga shared library for use with terminal
programs which support the XPR standard such as Term, VLT and Backtalk.
Its purpose is to provided the improved facilities of the B+ Protocol.
This version implements the 'File Information' facility which allows
file sizes and hence estimated download times to be displayed, together
with 'Download Resume' which allows partial file transfers to be
completed after an abort.
Does NComm use the xpr libraries? If so, you can get the xprbplus.library
from Library 5 of Amigauser, and then you would have BPlus protocols.
I'm glad you have it working. It is terribly frustrating to be unable to
make these things work!

Hello Betty, you are absolutely right — it is frustrating if it does not do
what you expect it to do. The answer to your question is yes, NComm does use
the XPR libs. I have now quick-b installed and (surprise) quite often I get it
to transfer files!!!! The results are not very consistent — once it works just
fine, next time it fails and locks up the terminal. I think I have to play
around more and to change the set ups for the modem, the libs, NComm, etc. I
will also try to use TERM3.3, which I just copied (TERM + docs = approx. 800kB,
took ages). I think that TERM is the most often used comms program for Amigas.
What do you think?

TERM seems to be quite popular. I have not used it, though. I use
AutoPilot for CompuServe, because it is the very best for that purpose.
For other boards, I still use AtalkIII.
I'm glad that some of your downloads are working. Let's hope they ALL
work soon. Let us know if we can help.

Paul, I understand that Byte would publish freelance stuff. I believe that the
main reason we don;t see more about the Amiga is because they don't have a
champion on staff and few bother to write articles on spec.
