I am amazed at the amount of controversy that can arise from a simple
comment in jest, such as refering to the original CD-ROM drives as
mono-speed (as opposed to today's dual- and quad-speed drives); but
then that's half the fun (and learning) available on CompuServe,
isn't it?
Of course, when I used the term "mono-speed", I was refering to the
150KB/sec Transfer Rate of the original CD-ROM drives. This value is
constant, independent of the speed-shifting that goes on "under the
hood" in a CLV (constant linear velocity) device such as a CD-ROM, as
opposed to the CAV (constant angular velocity) of most standard disk
drives. But I'm sure many new readers found the discussion of the
change in rotational speed with the position on the disc to be
enlightening. Thanks for the responses.

People don't know and we must be careful not to give wrong or misleading info
which is hard to correct later. Thought the original question was on some
drives calling themselves multi-spin, when in fact all drives are multi-spin
but then again, maybe that was a different thread. <g>
