Mitsumi and SCSI/OS2 ?

I haven't bothered with MS-DOS 6 so can't say whether there are any problems
with the LU005S and that version of DOS, but I can't see any reason for there
being any as long as you use the MSCDEX which shipped with DOS 6.
As for OS/2, currently there are no _released_ drivers, but there are at least
two drivers in beta test being written by non-Mitsumi people, and someone
mentioned a while back that Mitsumi themselves are doing one.
One of these beta drivers is in LIB 4 here, currently you'll need to get hold
of OS2_LU.EXE, the original upload, and UPDAT4.ZIP, the latest update. From
limited use this works well, supports audio and supposedly single-session
photoCD (I don't have any such CDs to try).
Note that the early versions were date crippled to expire on 31 May. Although
un-announced, update 4 still works with the date set to June 1, and from
examination of a disassembly the original location of the crippling code shows
no sign. IOW, either the author saw the light and removed it, or else he
realised how easy it was to crack and moved it <g>.
Finally, the Mitumi comes with a proprietary 16-bit interface card, it is NOT
SCSI and so doesn't work with the Adeptec controllers you mention (which is why
neither OS/2 not Windows NT support it 'out of the box').

thanks for responding. I think there's a big problem with unofficial drivers,
'cause you can't be sure to get one for further releases of your OS. So I
think, I'll ask my purse if it's willing to pay for an (expensive) SCSI-CDROM
(Toshiba/Nec) ;-).

I got the Mitsumi sort of free, though it's none the worse for that, but I've
come to the conclusion that as a developer I need something which the 'big
boys' support. Right now I reckon the Tosh. 3401 is _the_ drive, though my
purse must be in the same union as yours 'cos it's not too keen on forking out
for one either :).

after a long fight against my purse, I won <g>. So I decided to buy a
SCSI-drive, even if it's more expensive. But I think I will have a lot less
trouble using it with newer/other OS's like OS/2, NT and UNIX. I'll have a
closer look on the Toshiba, NEC and the TEXEL.

I'm currently having my motherboard swapped for a VL-bus one and am trying to
pursuade the dealer that giving a good trade-in price on my redundant cache
controller and motherboard against a 3401/1522 is a good deal for him <g> (he
does quite see it that way just yet, but I'm working on him).
It seems to me from a large number of messages I've seen that the 3401 is
really _the_ drive at present. I like the fact that OS/2 and NT support it
out-of-the-box.

Robin, I am running MSDOS6 with the LU005S and have experienced no problems
what so ever. Also, I am using the MSCDEX that came with MSDOS 6. 🙂 JimB
