#Speedcache+ who?

Can someone tell me who makes Speedcache + 4.0? I haven't had much luck
tracking this program down.

Speedcache+ 4.0 is published by SYMANTEC. They have a Forum here on CompuServe
(GO SYMANTEC) that has a Speedcach+ section. If you get it be sure to
understand how it computes its cache hit rate. It evaluates this rate very much
more conservativly than most other similar utilities. If you compare its
performance in terms of hit rate with the figures you might have seen for
Microsoft DOS 5.0 or 6.0s SMARTDrive you may get the false impression that it
not a very good cache. Nothing could be further from the truth. (Note: As you
asked the question in this forum, I assume you know that Speedcache+ caches
CD-ROMs as well as hard-disks and floppies.)

Thanks, Dai – yes I want it specifically for my CD-ROM drive. I'm using a
Toshiba 3301 currently and waiting for my order for the 3401 to get out of
backorder. I've heard many good things about Speedcache and when the 3401
finally arrives, it should be interesting to see how these work together.

You'll be able to see the difference. In a demo sequence for Star Trek 25th
Anniv. it cut the time the landing party beamed down from 25 seconds to around
8 seconds. Obviously your mileage may vary!
That's quite an improvement! How large a cache was used for that? The machine
I'm running is a 486/66 with 8mb and a non-accelerator (ET4000) VL bus video
card and a soon to be replaced Toshiba 3301.

I am using a 486/33 with 8MB and a Cirrus 54xx something card. The drive is
the SB Pro standard. The file I mention is on the Battle Chess CD-ROM, and it
stuck out as one to test because it was very slow and CD-ROM intensive. I used
a 2MB for the cache. For most other things I can see an improvement, but its
not as dramatic.
I'll see if I can find a copy of Battle Chess and try it out on my system. I've
already ordered Speedcache (backordered along with my Toshiba 3401)
