I just recently bought a NEC 3D monitor at a garage sale (Nice Monitor!) Unfortunately, no docs came with it. 🙁 So, could someone answer a couple of questions for me? What is the Mode button for? Is therer a way to store preset screen postions, (so I can center Super72 and the other modes)? Is there anything else I might want to know? 😉 Any help would be apprectiated! I've got the 3D docs. To be honest though I don't completely understand the documentation of the MODE switch so here is the direct quote. The MODE switch "selects the monochrome mode or color mode with a TTL video signal input. With an Analog video signal input and the MODE SWITCH ON, the monitor will give the user an additional user programmable memory area." The following table is then given. .MODE Input Video MODE .SWITCH Signal .—— ———– ———————————– .OFF TTL General Color Mode (CGA,EGA) .OFF ANALOG General Analog Mode )VGA, PGC, etc) .ON TTL Monochrome Mode (MDA) .ON ANALOG User Programmable Memory Area If you can make heads-or-tails of all this let me know. All I know is that my system (Flicker Free Video II on Amiga side and VGA on Bridgeboard side) seems to work better with MODE switch off I don't see anything in the docs about storing preset screen positions (except I believe it does store the current settings). But again the extent of my understanding is mostly "plug it in and fiddle with it until it works."

Considering how much I had to pay for my NEC 3D a few years ago, I don't want to know how much you paid for it at a garage sale <g>. Quoting from the manual the revalent info: "Mode switch – With an Analog video signal input and MODE SWITCH ON, the monitor will give the user an additional user programmable memory area." Basically what it's telling you is that the 3D 'remembers' screen settings based on what kind of signal input you are using. So having the mode switch on gives you more memory for those settings. BTW, the AUTO switch does nothing in Analog mode, it's only used in the TTL mode. The NEC 3D is not a bad monitor, but it does have it's quirks. I have 1" black borders on the left and right of the monitor display when used with the 4000 in the DBLNTSC mode. Some monitor's give you the capability of eliminating those black borders, but the NEC does not. // John – (Flying via AutoPilot) \X/ "Worf: To Hell with the Prime Directive – Give the Borg Windows!"

Thanks! I have 1/2 inch borders on each side of my screen, but that doesn't bother me to much, (not yet anyway 😉 The pictures a lot sharper than any other monitor I've had though, I can see the dither patterns in lores stuff, not to mention the scan lines on 15.75 non interlaced displays! By the way, what is the dot pitch? Bob Comer — Cruising the nets on AutoPilot from Cheyenne, Wyoming

The NEC 3D has a .28mm dot pitch. Some of the other specs you might be interested in: .Sync: Horizontal: 15.5 kHz to 38 kHz . Vertical: 50 to 90 Hz .Resolution: Horizontal: 1024 dots . Vertical: 768 lines .Video Band Width: 45 mHz // John – (Flying via AutoPilot) \X/ "Worf: To Hell with the Prime Directive – Give the Borg Windows!"

Are there still any NEC 3D's in the channel? A friend of mine is monitor shopping for his 4000/40. //Jonathan, \\//via AutoPilot

I've seen adds for them on omputer Shopper, they go for about $400 dollars. Great monitor! Bob Comer — Cruising the nets on AutoPilot from Cheyenne, Wyoming

Bob… That there Computer Shopper is a mighty big book…June issue is, like, over 800 pages. Can you narrow that down at all? 🙂 //Jonathan, \\//via AutoPilot

I seem to remeber that one of the places selling the 3D are in the glossy pages in the very back. (They also sell the Mitsubihi multiscans as well.) Bob Comer — Cruising the nets on AutoPilot from Cheyenne, Wyoming

Bob: How good a monitor is the Mitsubishi Diamondscans? The only experience with them that I've had is with a 20" one my local Amiga dealer had, and it wouldn't sync down to 15.75, not to mention that I didn't care for it's display. I assume that the 14" (or was it 13") one does sync down to 15.75 as it has a composite input as well as the standard input. // -Mike Schiller \X/ AMIGA! On AutoPilot in sunny Fort Lauderdale

I haven't had any direct experience with a Mitsubishi montior either, only second hand stories, and most of those were good. I do have a 20 year old Mitsubishi TV that still has a better picture than most TV's today! And I definitely like the Mitsubishi Eclipse 4wd Turbo (Cool car!) That's USA Flex. They had the NEC Multisync 3D listed for $399. The ad did say something about limited quantities. Jim

Try USA FLEX… they advertise peripherals on the back cover pages of Computer shopper and computers inside.

US Flex…last 5 or 6 pages in the book. Gary (I bought my 3D there…good service!)

I believe at one time, USA FLEX was selling new and refurbished NEC 3D's for a good price. You might have your friend give them a call at 1-800-444-4900 to see if they have any more available. // John – (Flying via AutoPilot) \X/ "Worf: To Hell with the Prime Directive – Give the Borg Windows!"

John: I just now called USA FLEX (I expected to leave a message on a voice mail system), and was surprised to find that they operate 24 hours a day! Well, they no longer have refurbed NEC 3D's, but they do have new ones, and they sell for $399.00. What is your experience with this monitor? // -Mike Schiller \X/ AMIGA! Well so far it's been a real nice monitor. I've been using the same one about 3 years now and not a glitch. Has a very good resolution and display. The only thing that bothers me is that the horizontal display area cannot be fully expanded to get rid of the borders when used with the 4000. But on my 3000, the borders were hardly noticable. Otherwise it's been a real good monitor and highly recommended. // John – (Flying via AutoPilot) \X/ "Worf: To Hell with the Prime Directive – Give the Borg Windows!"

Jonathan: I'm also monitor shopping. My Tatung monitor has died. I've bought a Panasonic Panasync C1381i, however it's not really a multisync as the name makes it sound, but rather an SVGA compatible monitor, so I'm going to be bringing this one back to the store I got it from (not my local Amiga dealer, he was closed this weekend), and try and get a better monitor. Does the 3D sync down to 15.75khz, and how high does it go? Do you know if it's possible to get a monitor that will sync from 15.75 to 72khz? // -Mike Schiller \X/ AMIGA! #102562From: Jonathan HirschmanJun 2, 1993 8:03 AM
Mike, As far as I know, its impossible to get anything "mainstream" with that kind of range. It might be possible to get a "specialty" monitor to handle it, tho. I believe that IDEK's 50xx series of monitors has the greatest scan ranges right now, from 15-50 or 60kHz. The 5017, BTW, is particularly sweet, and a pretty good price as 17" monitors go. Jonathan

The Nec 3D syncs from 15.75 to 38. I love this monitor! Bob Comer — Cruising the nets on AutoPilot from Cheyenne, Wyoming

John, perhaps your NEC's idisyncrasies could be corrected by some internal height and width adjustments. My secondhand 3D exhibits none of those large black borders–I have narrow ones on the left and right and virtually none at all on the top and bottom edges.
#102271From: Jeff SegawaMay 31, 1993 1:43 PM
What else might you want to know? For starters, don't try prying off that panel at the rear of the monitor. It looks like it might conceal some additional adjustment controls, but in fact, it's only there to cover up some marks left by the injection molding process. I don't have a manual either, but it seems to me that MODE is best left in the OFF position. I seem to get better centering overall this way and a lot less fussing around with the controls every time the Amiga changes video modes on me. I think that the NEWER NEC models might have multiple memory settings (one for each desired video synch speed), but I don't think that the 3D does. However, I seem to be getting very fine performance as-is, so I'm not going to complain.
#102302From: Robert ComerMay 31, 1993 6:13 PM
I was just about to pry off that panel, Thanks! 🙂 Does there happen to be a degaussing switch anywhere on or in the monitor?
#102588From: Jeff SegawaJun 2, 1993 1:06 PM
There is no manually-controlled degausing circuit that I can see. Most likely, it is fully automatic. If you've got greenish or purplish spots on your screen because someone once put a big magnet too close, why not borrow the biggest bulk demagnetizer than you can lay your hands on, and sweep over the screen? Should work fine. Of course, it should go without saying that everything should be powered down while being demagnetized 🙂 One of those handheld demagnetizers the size of a small grapefruit should work great on this and any hard drives or large collections of floppies that you wish to completly erase.

It's wierd, but for the first half hour of my 3D being on, there is a slight discoloration in the bottom right, but it goes away after that. I've never seen a monitor act quit like that before. My computers are on all the time, except during storms, so it doesn't really bother me. Bob Comer — Cruising the nets on AutoPilot from Cheyenne, Wyoming

My 3D has a similar discoloration (more of a slight darkening). Mine doesn't seem to go away but it is just barely perceptible and in fact at first I wasn't even sure it was real or if I was just imagining it.
