#Bad Mitsumi Drives

Well, now I know why my drive won't work with the OS/2 driver. Grabbed this off
a forum today. My drive fits the following description exactly. Now I hope I
can get CompUSA to give me credit on the drive for an NEC instead. I wish I
would have forked over the extra bucks for a better drive in the first place.

By default, CIS "word wraps" a forum message (I believe the intent is to
support folks with screen widths other than 80 characters) . When you're
finished typing, just tell CIS to store the message as "UNFormated".
Hi Mike,
this message is not completly correct so far. The drives you are referring to
are manufactured in March and April and our driver reports M06! These drives
SUPPORT Photo-CD and we are working on a OS/2 support also.

I was simply passing along what I had read. I tried your latest update (#4)
with the new testdrv.exe. Testdrv.exe reported my drive as M06 just as you
said. But, when the new .ADD driver initializes, it reports M-?-. Don't know
what I could be doing wrong. Apparenlty my drive wants to work. (As evidenced
by the testdrv results). But it just refuses to work with the driver. I've
read elsewhere that the placement of the BASEDEV statements may ha something to
do with it. I'll try moving them around. I'll post another message if I'm
successful.

Hi Mike,
the problem with the M06 appears due a timing change. As TESTDRV.EXE uses many
delays it seems to work this way.
I think there's nothing you could do to solve this problem.

Hello,
I have a question, I have a mitsumi and am now worried that it is
one of these bad drives, I bought it in March, but, I have used it with photoCD
successfully. How can I find out without ripping my computer apart?

I share your fear. I saw in the library a program named testdrv.exe, as a part
of a third party os/2 driver designer, but it dont works under DOS.
If it was possible to get a copy of this program for DOS, i am shure that its
would be great for most of mitsumi's users.

The only way to be certain is to remove the drive and look at the serial
number. If its starts with a 'D' and was manufactured in March (or April) then
its one of the drives mentioned in the Internet message on bad Mitsumi's
I have read several messages on this forum that state the drive will work
with PhotoCD if you have the 2.1b version of the DOS drivers. If you don't
care about running OS/2, and PhotoCD is working for you, then I don't think I
would worry about whether the drive is the 004 or 005 model.
