I am currently rendering to tape. (Until I get a new hard drive, 3.0/1 ate my
available hd space) I am field rendering. After the scene was done rendering
one frame had not recorded. (I checked the SMPTE code and it looks ok but it
didn't render anyway)
I have attempted to rerecord that frame serveral times but no luck. First I
rendered only that frame by changing the frames in the scene menu. It didn't
match the frames on either side. I thought maybe it was b/c of the Field
rendering so I rendered, but didn't record, the frames on either side. This
didn't work either.
Am I on the right track. Does the field rendering option effect the way frames
are rendered between key frames or is every frame effected seperatly?

When you go back to re-record the frame…what happens? Does it record in the
wrong spot or nothing at all? Make sure that on your Sanyo you are insert
editing VIDEO only. if you are insert editing with Audio 2 specifically, you'll
be messing up your time code.

Jim, sounds like you have some experience with the sanyos. Do you use them to
edit with as well?

I know your message was to Jim but I have some info on editing with sanyo. I
was at Image World yest. and TAO has a new version of the Editizer called
EDIT-SAN.
A B Roll or cuts only. Cheaper ($1895 vs. $2495 list) than a full blown unit,
all the features but limited to sanyo units. I'm pretty sure there are no
dealers yet. (at least in the mid-west)
I'm wrestling with the idea of using this system and limiting expansion to
Sanyo Products or getting TAO's full system with an eye to the future. I want
to upgrade to full SMPTE. The sanyo is a lot of bang for the buck, that makes
it a tough choice.
Any other Sanyo users out there with an opinion?

Yep, I use a Sanyo as my main Record VTR with 2 1970's as A/B Sources. They are
all controlled by a TAO Editizer which coordinates them and the Toaster quite
nicely.

I don't know… Sounds like the editizer version from TAO does a lot more than
the EDIT-SAN version. I had quite a few problems…

The Editizer has its problems, as well, but it does offer quite a value for the
price.

The frame is recorded, it just isn't flowing with the rest of the sequence.
Their is some downward motion and the frame will be in a lower possition than
the rest of the frames.

So…the Frame is recorded in the right spot but the frame is lower? Yikes…
haven't ever experienced anything like that. Did you change your scene file to
make the new frame different somehow? How about the camera? is the Field
rendering the same as the original? If the frame is in the right place the
Sanyo's doing it's job. Sounds like the output from the Toaster is screwy.

I gave up and rerendered it. For all I know it could be that I was rendering
the wrong frame. How, I don't know……but the second time I made sure that
the code was ok on the tape. Is there any reason why a frame will not render
or a frame will be skipped other than a drop-out or code problem?
Is there any reason not to record color bars on the tape prior to rendering.
Currently I record black only.

I would stick with the Black when striping Time Code. The color bars are (I'm
obviously not a technition) somehow wider and may not be full recorded over
when rendering to tape. Make sure you dispense of the color bars in both
framebuffers when you render to tape as these bleed into the recording causing
an annoying flicker.

Thanks. I read the part about the color bars in the framebuffers before but I
didnt know if that extended to the tape as well.
Do you (or anyone else) have a good way to look for dropouts in code. On the
Sanyo 'DEBG 9' (I think thats the right command) will display a representation
of the code but I think I may loss my mind if I stare at
o+,o+,o+,o+,o+,+,o+,o+,o+,o+,o+,o+,o+,o+,o+,o+,o+,o+,o+,o+,o+,o+,o+,o+ etc…..
for any length of time. Maybe this function would serve some sort of error
search program….I'd buy it.

The way I think of field rendering is two frames for the price of one.
The scene advances for each field. When you go back and insert you don't
need to be frame accurate but field accurate. If your machine edits on
the even field then you'll loose the odd field and notice that something
is missing.
You may have to live with the loss or start all over. Unless you can
change which field you are editing.
