Do you Sysops edit messages?
I have the impression that several messages I wrote lately have been
crippled in respect to text I've quoted. I don't quote whole posts like
you can see people do on Internet, I just take one or two lines.
Or does CIS filter out a "greater than" sign (>) in the first column?

Messages are not edited. Unlike other commercial system(s) (at least 1 I
have personal knowledge of) the abilty of edit messages does not exist
here, nor do I think anyone would seriously propose that it be implemented.
We do not edit messages. Only on rare occasions will we move an entire
message out of view and send a message to the originator of that message as
to why it was moved. I'm not sure about the > sign being filtered out,
Steve can give us a better clue on it. What messages in particular have
you noticed this on?

Well, I 'sort of have kinda been like you know' a Sysop fo about a year
now. Generally, I stick to the AmigaTech forum and deal with the technical
side of the house. But once in a while I overstep my bounds and actually
say something here :-).

What's probably happening is CIS is reformatting the quoted part,
making it all run together. To avoid this, put a . or a space in front of
the > in each line – this has the same effect as a "post unformatted"
except on a line-by-line basis.
The reformatting was implemented to allow for nicer displays on varying
screen widths. Probably not as important now as it was in the 8-bit
computer, 40-char/line display days but it's still there.

Sysops have the ability to change the section to which a message is
posted, or to change the title of a message – or to delete a message from
the board, though I don't think I've ever known THAT to happen in the
AmigaForums in the years I've been here. But no sysop, in ANY forum, has
the ability to edit the text of a message. If you put it here, that's the
way it was posted. We couldn't change it if we wanted to.
I haven't tried to quote with a > sign, but I do believe I have seen such
quotes. You might need to put a space in front of each > in order to
preserve the formatting, though.

I've noticed that the CIS editor will delete a < if it is the first
character of a line even with the . (period) inserted first by AP. I
haven't tried other characters like the > but it seems certain characters
like it and / get axed. Some of these are special characters to the system
and I imagine it considers them illegally used and ignores them. IMO

a > gets eaten as well. The problem occurs only in the first column,
however.
