#PostScript Prt. Driver

So… does anybody know…
I really want a Postscript preference printer driver! WB 3.x was
suppose to give that to us. But without that being release, what is a
poor guy (with a Postscript Laser) suppose to do.
I have only a very few applications, that I use, on a regular basis
that don't print postscript. (otb – being one of them, and AutoPilot being
another). To say the least it's a pain in the but to switch the printer
to HP emulation in order to get a print out from these programs.
Does anybody know if there is a public PS driver somewhere? Or does
WB2.4 (I have 2.1) support the PS preference. I still have a very good 24
pin Star printer which I took off line years ago, cause I just never used
it anymore – and it was taking up a lot of room on ye desk top. Do ya
think I'm going to have to dig that out agian, cause I'll never see that
driver?
Dale – didn't you ask this same question several months ago? What was
your solution?

PS – I do have post1.7 (or somethin') but that is not pratical for use
within programs (like I can't just hit 'Amiga/?' from within AP here to
print a message out – Post won't cut it)

Roy,
I'm almost positive that WB 2.1 included the PS printer driver,
although it was less than perfect. I've had my PS printer since before
3.x was available to developers and I know that I was able to use it from
the Amiga without resorting to HP emulation mode, and I'm relatively
certain that I wasn't using a non-Commodore driver.

You are right, 2.1 has a postscript driver, although I have never used
it as I don't have a postscript printer.

Well Bob, as I said to Gary, if this is true then I really missed it when
I installed my workbench some 2 years ago.
Having just check every one of my 3 WB2.1 disks I DO NOT find a PS driver.
I check all the devs/printer drawers to no avail.
Now, how can I get a copy of this supposed PS driver?

Roy,
While I cannot immediately find my 2.1 disks, I did find an image of
the 2.1 install disk on my HD and looked at the installer script. It
looks like the printer drivers are distributed on the EXTRAS disk in the
"storage/printers" directory, not "devs/printer".
However, what you really should do is to boot from the 2.1 Install disk
and, open the "Install Printers" drawer, run the English Install script.
There is a Postscript option there for you to choose.

get the PS driver, BTW.

I searched and searched my disks. Could it be that I have 2.0? Its hard
to say. I'm working from copies of the masters (Can't say as I can find
the actual masters at this time — Hmmm, I wonder what pile of what seems
like 1,000's of floppies, I have that I NEVER use any more, did I put
those masters 🙂 ).
My WB reports version; Workbench version 37.67 – Does that tell us if I
installed wb 2.0 or 2.1?
If I don't have that driver, then what am I to do to get one. Don't
suppose there is one around in the Libs anywhere.

2.1 does indeed come with a postscript driver. But I don't use 2.1, so I
can't tell you where it is… although I thought 2.1 came with a printer
drivers disk, or directory on the extras disk?
2.1 Workbench version is 38.35.

WB 2.1 comes on _five_ Disks, not three.
You obviously got WB 2.0 only.
BTW, to go for PS, you need to install three files:
Workbench2.1:devs/postscript_init.ps
Extras2.1:Prefs/PrinterPS
Extras2.1:Storage/Printers/PostScript

Lets say I did have those three files. (Although you are right I do have
wb2.0 – was always waiting for 3.0 to come out before I upgraded again)
Anyway do you know of any reason those file wouldn't work on a 2.0 system?
I mean, if I put those files in place (that is proper places)
devs:postscript_init.ps
Prefs:PrinterPS
dh0:devs/printers/Postscript
then it will all work? This is wonderful Are you sure there are now
other files that my 2.0 system would need?
Why hasn't someone done a PD or shareware version of this stuff.

There ARE shareware/PD postscript interpreters for the Amiga — POST 1.7
and Ghostscript are two recent ones. Also several commercial PS
interpreters, though none actively marketed now. Get Final Copy II or
Final Writer or ProPage — they render Postscript directly to non-PS
printers with very good results.

Rendering Postscrip directly to non-PS printers is not what I was
looking for. I have a postscript printer (It's my only printer on line, I
took my 24pin Star off the desk a long time ago).
What I wanted, and have found, is a preference PS driver so that I
could make my simple text print outs from programs that don't support PS.
AP is a good example. I could never print messages (LeftAmiga-P) without
changing my printer to HP mode first (I have an olded NEC without
autoswitching).
Although it has been determined that I don't have 2.1 – instead I still
have only 2.04 and never did get the ps drivers. I have now gathered the
drivers that I need and all is working well.
Yes there ARE shareware/PD postscript interpreters for the Amiga, and I
do have POST 1.7. But the appears to be not PS printer drivers for
Preference. I did find one here in the Libs., but it was from 1989 and
listed as a beta version for WB1.3 systems. I've downloaded it but have
not tryed it yet.

The interpreters like POST have been updated continually and the latest
versions are only a year or so old. One of them (POST 1.7, I think) is the
basis of the very serviceable Postscript rendering engine built into Final
Copy and Final Writer, which can even display Encapsulated PS files in
color within the program.

Hi Roy,
yesterday I happened to install a new A2000 (yes, you still can buy them
over here in GER). I installed WB 2.05, and then I copied the postscript
stuff from the 2.1-Disks as you suggested above (you have to copy
"Prefs:PrinterPS.info" as well).
I set the Printer to PostScript, entered
"run >NIL: CMD parallel ram:spool opt m"
an issued a
"dir >prt:"
And voila, all worked fine. The file "ram:spool.1" created by cmd was nice
looking PostScript.
So all you need are these four (including PrinterPS.info) files to get it
running. Hope this will help.

Yes, I too, got ahold of those files and installed them into the proper
places. And it's wonderful!! All works well now. The first thing I did
to test the drive, was load a .txt file into Muchmore and pressed Alt-O.
The file printed just fine. Could never do that before without first
switching my Printer into HP mode. I also tested it with AP and printed
out a couple of messages – all worked well!
Thanks alot for the help. This is exactly what I was looking for. No
longer will I have to use that HP mode on my printer.

My 2.1 shows Kickstart version 37.175 and Workbench version 38.35. The
postscript printer driver is the PrinterPS tool in the Prefs drawer of the
Amiga Extras Version 2.1 diskette.

I use 2.1 with Postscript selected in Preferences. If it is not in your
devs:printers or storage/printers drawers you may have to load it from
your 2.1 disks. Remember it asking you what drivers you wanted loaded?
You probably didn't select Postscript. I have had excellent results with
my Panasonic KX-P4455.

If what the 3 of you say is true, then I've been working for over 2
years (has it been that long?) without using this wonderful feature. I
have always used the HP driver.
Are you sure yous guys don't have 2.4 or something.
I'm gone to check my master disks now for that driver, but I'm almost
certian it's not there.

Hmmm, I can't find a PS driver anywhere. Now what should I don't want to
send me yours.
