#MAC/PC at once?

I have an Amiga 400/040, currently with no internal add-ons. I have need
to run two very specialised programs, one for the Mac and one for a MSDOS
operating system.
Can anyone advise me whether it is possible to run emulators for both
systems in the one machine? and what would be the best. I note that the
Emplant is widely recommended (for Mac only at the moment?) but I also
have seen comments on probems with the internals of the 4000 when fitting
additions.
Any advice/comment would be welocme. I don't really want to go to a PC
machine if I can avoid it. However current events suggest this may be
inevitable :-0.

What you need is an Emplant board which already does Macintosh and soon
it will have '486 emulation. That is the best way to go in my opinion.
Maybe you should post a message to Jim Drew at Utilities Unlimited for
more details. I also have an A4000 and have had no problems in fitting it
with a host of expansion boards.

Thanks for the advice; I rather gathered that was the way to go from other
coversations over the months. It is good to hear your experience.
I may be coming to the US/Canada in August and it may be cheaper to buy
then. The current version here is $Aus800. which is about $US570. What
is a US price?
Do I gather that you run OS/2 on an Amiga?

I actually do not have an Emplant board. When I purchased my 4000 I
wanted an Emplant but the only emulation that was available was Macintosh
when I needed PC immediately. I knew it was forthcoming but I could not
wait so I bought a A2386SX BirdgeBoard instead for $225.00US. Everything I
have heard and read about the Emplant has been positive. The prices for
Emplant vary from $279.95 to $399.95. I guess you should wait unitl you
visit North America. If I could do it all over again I would definitely
get the Emplant board and a 4000T.
I run OS/2, Windoze and DOS without any problems. I wanted something
on the PC side that was 32 bit and capable of Multitasking and OS/2 seems
to work well. I guess it is because I have 4 hard disks in my machine (2
for the Amiga and 2 for the PC). I have an entire host of PC apps that
run a bit slow but is more than adequate for most purposes.
Sorry for rambling on but I think as far as emulation is concerned you
can never have too much information on what it takes to have acceptable
results.
One other thing that I am not sure of is if the Emplnat board is
capable of utilizing ISA expansion cards to make use of PC hardware.
Maybe someone else has the answer to that. Like I said in my first post
you may want to drop a line to Jim Drew at Utilities Unlimited for more
detailed information on this topic.

Thanks for all that; it is most useful and is certainly not too much;
especially that you run three o/s with success. I suppose the main worry
is how or if the support for the Amiga evapourates.

Don't forget to add in the price of Mac ROMs…but the Emplant is certainly the
best way to go, especially if you can wait a while longer for the PC emulation.
Depending on what kind of programs you need, you might be able to get by with a
software PC emulation for a while.

Thanks for the reminder, I presume they are not impossible to get. I am
starting to experiment with PCTask at the moment which seems to go well
though I haven't got the MSDOS part optimised, having to struggle with
learning how to optimise the startup stuff. I have no experience in this
area yet <g> or groan:-(
BTW I note your newsletter; is it possible to subscribe from here
(Australia)?

I'm told that it needs something to be a bridge, then it can use the other
slots. Also, Jim Drew had stated that while the almost-finished product is
great with windows and DOS, it don't do OS/2 >YET< .

Thanks for the information! I think I may be needing an Emplant for my
next job as it may require me to have access to a Macintosh. What better
execuse than to get an Emplant board. But I have no more room in my tiny
but mighty A4000. What was C= thinking when they put only 4 slots in
here???
Mr. Jim Drew better come out with that stuf fast!! I can't wait too
much longer.

Your single best option is to get an Emplant board from Utilties
Unlimited… it ships with MAC Emulation (you need to supply the ROMS and
the system software) and will soon also have emulation for 486 machines.
UU has a support section in the AmigaVendor Forum (GO AMIGAV)… have a
visit there.

Ask Jim Drew 72662,14 for details on the Emplant. Though he makes them and will
of course be positive, he has every detail on the Emplant.
Furthermore, there not so much wrong with a PC if you happen to have programms
that do a great job for you.
