Ken, I was just like you about a year and a half ago, with a stock Amiga 1000. Without an upgrade it will be difficult to run anything current on your computer, but an old program called Scribble works as a good processor if you can find it. For GIF files you'll need either a PD program that will run it, or something like Art Department Pro which probably wouldn't run on a stock 1000 anyway. If you're into beefing up the 1000, you can still do that too but it's getting very difficult to find these upgrades since they quit making the 1000 some years ago. There are some GIF viewers I think here on the forum somewhere for the Amiga but you'll have to decompress the file with an archiver type thing. I've only managed this a few times myself so you may want to check with a Sysop. If you aren't familiar with the Amiga, you'll need to check out Amazing Com- puting, (an Amiga mag), or AmigaWorld. Both are generally avail- able in larger newstands. I've upgraded my 1000 and like it a lot. It can be upgraded to the point you can run a lot of great software, everything up to the AGA stuff. It's a good machine.

Ken, Does your 1000 have OS 1.3? How much memory? There are several word processors you could use on it – ProWrite, WordPerfect, and several others. You might find someone here who would like to sell a used one, or you can get one from any Amiga dealer. For the GIF programs, I would suggest that you download ViewTek from AmigaArts, Library 14 for a viewer. Then, you can download the weather maps from CIS, and view them with your viewer after they are downloaded. There are other viewers, of course. I just happen to like ViewTek for the older operating systems. I doubt that your A1000 would have the 2.0 and later systems that are required by some of the newer viewers. By the way – would you please turn off the caps lock? It's hard to read messages in all caps. Thanks. —Betty
