#MetaScan & Retina
5 messages in this thread
Ben,
A progress report on MetaScan, IM, the Retina and my system.
1) I got MetaScan to work. First it refused to run when I activated the
loader from IM R/t (by pressing the F4) key. After numerous failures
I decided to "jump start" the module by opening two CLIs and running
the CMPI:MetaScanIM and RXPI:MetaScanIM.rexx programs by hand.
This worked but my system crashed (guru 8000 000B).
2) *However*, the !@#@ thing now loads fine from inside IM. I _did not_
move or change anything, it just decided to start working. (On my
desk I have proof of computer-based sentience, and it *loves* to
irritate me!) It has started fine from IM R/t every time now (about
50 or 60 so far).
3) BUT (you knew this was coming, didn't you). It gurus every once in
a while. I narrowed this down to the fact that whenever I have the
RetinaView.rexx script run by IM as a 2nd Display, the system crashes
after allocating the scan buffer (when I press the "SCAN" button) and
updating the display. (Same guru as above.)
4) To make matters worse, I tried to modify the RetinaView.rexx program.
If you change the 2nd to last line to specify an address instead of
swapping (i.e. from "address;" to "address 'IM_Port';") then it will
scan and display. BUT, *then* it crashes. In other words, changing
the ARexx address decides when the machine crashes (before the scan
or after). Note that all *other* loads (non-scans) work fine with
the command set either way.
I'd like to request that you consider adding n a future update an ARexx command
for determining/changing the 2nd Display. Something like:
SECONDDISP ON|OFF <script>
SECONDDISP returns status & script name (if any) SECONDDISP ON
toggles the 2nd display button on SECONDDISP OFF toggles the 2nd
display button off SECONDDISP <script> specifies a script to be used
SECONDDISP ON <script> specifies a script and toggles the button on SECONDDISP
OFF <script> specifies a script and toggle the button off
Let me know if you have problems pinpointing the problem with MetaScan &
RetinaView. For all I know it could be my system (I think it enjoies doing
this to me. 🙂

Charles,
I couldn't test that, as we never made anything called "Retinaview".
Sounds to me like it is trampling on the system, more than likely.

Charles,
I'd be interested in the 'details' of the crash when you press the
'scan' button (in your item "3)"). If you're running enforcer/mungwall
I'd be especially interested (makes the debugging easier)
Vic,
I'll get you the details. It might be tough as the Retina screen is the one
open when all this happens — and I haven't tried getting detailed info when it
is displayed.
On another note….I like the MetaScan. It multitasks *much* better than
ASDG's scan package (which makes the mouse jerk and hogs the system when
scanning).
Also, please consider adding >4 color preview for those who have "the power" to
do that.

Charles,
re: >4 color (well, grey scale) preview
Ok, tho that's only a 3 plane screen there
