smooth motion
30 messages in this thread
Im having trouble getting absoulutly perfect motion in the keyframer. If 3d
studio is to compete with the high end dudes then the next version should have
a much more complex motion curve editor.. Not that postage stamp sized one in
the key editor. Anyway, beyond my complaining.. I was wondering if anybody
could give me some tips on how they get smooth motion.. Let me give an example
of my problems..
1) If im flying a camera around and want to ease out of a move then I ues the
EASE TO function, but that takes frames off of my previous keyframe. Hence I
get a hiccup in the motion. How would you make an ease out with out using the
ease out function..?
2) Are less keyframes better than more when doing long flying logo
type of animations to get smoother motion?
Thanks for your help…
ARG
Andrew,

A hiccup? Do you mean camera drift/wobble/jiggle? If so, check out your
Tension/Continuity/Bias settings along with your ease to/ease from.
TCB will provide the control for linear movement or non-linear movement
between keyframes. See pg. 8-97 to 8-101 of the ref man.

Andrew, this is exactly why we're releasing our motion curve editor next
week… called TEMPO.KXP. It's graphical and interactive, and lets you draw
the velocity for position and rotation keys with bezier splines, and then
optionally add fractal noise for more realism.
I noticed that you're not on my IPAS mailing list database. Is there a reason
why you haven't sent that little white IPAS card back to me?

G-
Working with Kathy Clinton on the user's groups now. If I'm not on the list
thru schrieber, could you add me & send a couple extra cards for some of my
user's that may have lost theirs?

I can send you one, but each person needs to contact me directly for their own
catalog. If they've lost their white card, they can write me at 3739 Balboa
St., #230, SF CA 94121 and request another one.
– G
Thanks,
Will pass the info

Since your message was posted Friday, and since this is next week (already)
does this mean I can order #5 and #6 and they'll be sent out this week? Does
any of this sound like I'm impatient to have these wonderful goodies? Hey, I
don't need to see your wonderful catalog (no, I want one anyway, so I can show
my friends), I just want this stuff NOW!
If the printer makes his deadline to the bindery, and if the bindery manages to
bind the two 120-page manuals in time (this is a large job for the small
bindery I'm using), we'll be shipping by Tuesday, May 10th (a week from
manana).
If you want to play with a bunch of these routines now, check out the demos
that I uploaded last night to DL1. They're fully-functional, with the
exception of not being able to save data back out to 3DS.
– G
Fair enough, but you didn't answer the 64K question — can I order now for
shipping next week? Even if I can't be first in line, I don't want to be last.
I know, you're a conscientious company who doesn't like to sell product you
don't yet have — but it can hardly be considered vaporware now. Besides, you
can use my money to pay the printer :>
As you can see from the demos in DL1, this stuff sure ain't vaporware (except
for vapor.axp, of course :-). We started taking orders today, since we're only
a week away from shipping.
– G
>We started taking orders today, since we're only a week away from shipping.
And what very pleasant people you have helping you in Denver — I talked with
Marnie and with any luck I'll have the disks (#6 #7 — I keep getting confused
over the numbering) by next Friday?
Thanks again to you and all your Yost group for creating such wonderful
goodies. If only your group was doing the Object Collision/Detection/Avoidance
stuff. Sigh.
Thanks for your support, Mike. That's what continues to make it possible for
us to do this stuff!

G,
Could you explain to me what's going on here? I feel foolish asking but
threre seems to be a lot of excitement here. I'd like to be on the mailing
list also.

Your IPAS Boutique doodad was sent out earlier today… you should have it by
Friday or Saturday.
– G
You are sending out IPAS doodads? (I take it you mean promotional kits of some
kind.) Please send one along to me at
48 Dighton St. #2 Brighton, MA 02135
Yes I am still stateside these days, unfortunately I have been trapped in a
time/space vortex known as "publishing" until the end of May.
If you send all your promotional stuff I can show it off when I make my rounds
of the user groups in Europe (June-Sept).
Michele
Comin at ya early next week.
Stuck in Brighton, eh?
– G
Yes, back in Brighton. A pleasant place populated by preschool nieces and
nephews all clamoring for some of "Michi's" attention, especially when she's on
the computer.
hi gsary from natalkie (hi gary from natalie, age 2-1/2)
Problem is, playing Peekaboo and Horsey Horsey is way more fun than indexing
books and poring over publishing contracts.
Michele
Life is short… you should take advantage of the peekaboo time.
Say hi to Natalkie for me!
– G
Hi Michele, I see your back in Brighton, since your last visit here when you
taught me about single frame animation, one of the things I set up was a 3D
Studio Users group here in Montreal that meets once a month. If your ever up
here visiting let me know… Also enjoyed reading your Guide to 3D people in
Multi-Cad magazine! One question though… the bald lady on the cover, was she
a victim of too much UV ray exposure?..<g> P.S Your three books: Animals and
People, Materials and lighting and technical Tips, are they sold in North
america? I'm putting together a list of books to recommend to the Montreal
Users and a computer bookstore that wants to carry 3D animation … Bob Smith
Dear Bob,
Glad to hear you're doing so well with 3DS! It sounds like you've come a long
way since my visit!
The three new books will be available in North America as of July 1. As for
where from, how much etc. these details are being worked out in the next week
or so. I'll make an announcement when things are confirmed.
If you get the info a week from now, will this be soon enough for you to
include the books on your list?
Michele
Bonjour Michele,
<<The three new books will be available in North America as of July 1. As for
where from, how much etc.>> Just let me know where they can be ordered, I
know that Digimation carries your three first books so if they do the same for
the other three that will be one source.. However, for the bookstore that is
looking to sell it locally, maybe you can forward to me who they can order
from..
<<If you get the info a week from now, will this be soon enough for you to
include the books on your list?>> I'll hold off till I get your notice since I
can confirm today that the next meeting will be on May 24th at Dawson College
in Montreal. Oh yes.. the cote des Neiges joke….<groan>…cheers & talk to
you again soon.. Bob
Gary, Any chance you can sent out one of those IPAS Boutique Doodad's to my
Montreal Users Group? the address is: Bob Smith Montreal 3D Studio Users Group
3488 Cote des Neiges, Suite 1113 Montreal, Quebec Canada H3H 2M6
Bob Smith [Archi-Media Productions]
Bob, a doodad was sent out first class mail to your address last Monday, so you
should get it any day now.
Note that I've got you at suite 113 instead of 1113. Will it still get to you
with that number?
– G
no problem… it will probably be arriving by monday..between waiting for the
doodad and reading Inside 3D Studio… I'm going to burst with all this new and
interesting data to learn about.. Bob Smith
G.. <<Bob, a doodad was sent out first class mail to your address last Monday,
so you should get it any day now.>>
I received the Ipas Boutique brochure yesterday and it looks very good.. Could
I ask you to send me 15 ? I want to have them available to the members of my
Montreal Users Group for our upcoming meeting on May 24.
I'll be downloading the demo files that are mentioned in the brochure since
quite a few people are showing interest in the new routines you've come out
with… p.s. Dont forget to change my suite number to 1113.
Bob Smith
Bob, the truth is that I'd rather the folks who own 3DS at your meeting just
write me a note asking for me to send them a catalog personally… or call the
800/FOV/IPAS number and request one. Would that be ok?
– G
G-
Problem is that most of the folks in my group do not subscribe to Compuserve so
they cannot contact you directly, secondly the 800 number does not work from
here.. So I'll simply hold up in the air the one copy I have so everyone can
see it… While they browse thru the stack of 30 copies of Viewpoint Graphics
30 page Newsletter "Exchange" that was sent for the group to read.. Bob Smith

A stupid Canadian joke:
Q: What do you wear when it's cold in Montreal?
A: You put on your Cote de Neiges!
Har har har
Michele <I told you it was stupid>
In addition to what Jonas has said, The new KXP from the Yost Group (due out in
a couple of weeks, I believe) called TEMPO.kxp will let you edit positional and
rotational velocities (sound familiar JohnT?<g>) using interactive bezier
splines to your heart's content. If you are on the IPAS catalog list, you
should get one soon. If not, Email your address to the Yost Group and they'll
see that ya get one.
