I'm trying to set up a SLIP connection to our RS/6000 at work, and I'm having
some trouble. I have both the AmigaNOS s/w and the AmiTCP sofware. With the
AmigaNOS stuff, I configured everything as best as I could figger out from the
documentation, but nowhere in there does it say how to make the actual
connection.
With AmiTCP, I also configured stuff as best I could, and then tried to call
the host machine with TERM. If TERM was running first, then AmiTCP would not
start. If AmiTCP was already running, then TERM would not start.
Does anyone have any experience with using either of these packages, and can
you offer some suggestions/help?

I've got AmiTCP set up to SLIP connect to my internet connection provider,
but I had to write a bit of C and ARexx code to do it automatically. If
you always get the same IP address when dialing in, for your Amiga and for
your destination RS/6000, it shoudn't be too big a hassle to set your
config files for those addresses and dial in with a terminal program, quit
the terminal program (setting options so the modem doesn't hang up) and
start AmiTCP with startnet.

Actually, I just thought about where you posted this. Even though I think
I can help, significantly more than I have, you might have put this
question over in Amigauser/Communications?
That's basically what I tried, but when I called the RS/6000, I got a carrier,
and then it just hung up. Could be a problem at the RS/6K end, I'll investigate
that further.
Thanks for the confirmation that I was on the right track. If I have more

Can you or anyone give me some info on how I could create a small NODE on
internet.
I live in the BoonDocks and there are not any local "providers", in fact most
folfs here don't even know what it is.
Only reason I might try to do something is because the Community College and
Hospital and such are interested.

I'm not sure just exactly where 'the Boondocks' you are talking about is.
Perhaps if you honed us all in on some particular area, someone might jump
in with some ideas on local 'connection providers'.
I can give you some ideas on how to make an Amiga (or a PC for what it's
worth (actually, it seems as though there's better software for PC's than
the Amiga, Huh, big surprise)) a 'host' on the internet.

I live at Deep Creek Lake, MD about a 4hour drive west of Baltimore.
It's a nice resort community.
The lake has 75 miles of shoreline.
There are 3 amiga owners in the entire county.
I beleive the population of the county is about 10,000
I'd be glad to share more……

There's an interesting name!
Since you're in 'the boondocks' in the first place, I guess even CI$ is
long distance to log on to. So…for internet access…looking through a
book I have handy, how about talking to:

You can get a new account by logging in as 'new', although since I don't
see the data number here that may be difficult.
I have no map in front of my face so I have no idea how close that would
be to you or if they would be any good. If I would get off my butt and
locate a map I could probably run down a few others in 'somewhat' nearby
metropolitan areas, but I 'm not doing it so let me know if you want more
ideas.
At least you know of two other Amiga owners, I only know one and it's his
son's and I live in Seattle! Actually, I guess, I have started running
into a few more now that there is a new(!) Amiga store only four blocks
from where I work, in a high-rise, downtown. Oh yeah, there are a few on
CI$ from this area, too.
That sounds like an ideal community. The only thing more I'd want, beyond
that, is more warm weather and sunshine! (an Amiga dealer wouldn't hurt
either, as long as we're dreaming).
One more thing, your local library may have access to the internet. Ours
does. If you can get on it, somewhere, and start nosing around, you may
find all sorts of options that you didn't know existed.

I have access to internet now through a MS-DOS platform useing WitchCraft
dial-in, (up), (over), whatever.
It just seems to me that the Amiga could serve the function of a full-blown
NODE if given half a chance…
I have checked with the library's and they want me to persue any possibility of
putting a local node together. Also the Community College is very interested in
getting on but they hav'nt had any luck.
Turns out the closest node is in Frostburg State U, an hour away, and they had
to jump through alot of hoops to get on. They are not interested in sharing.
Does anyone know if an Amiga NODE would be doable?
PS Digex is someone I have talked to. And they are about 3.5 hrs away at 75mph!

Zeddock (jim)…. Zeddock Miller is my handle. It comes from off of an old
road sign that I procured as a kid. I always liked the sound of it… Zed (as
in bed) dock (as in dockk for a boat). There it even looks good!

Thanks! but, I've tried Mosaic, alas, I couldn't convince it to work on my
A2000 with 2.1 (with a whole mess of other stuff). It really wants that
'datatype' support. Doesn't seem to be a way to threaten it enough to
scare it into running either. That message about datatypes keeps staring
right back at me. I guess I'm gonna have to get a newer machine, I want
to, and could afford it, but the whole marketplace and C= in particular
are in such a state of turmoil, I'm trying to wait for while, at least
until we know whether Commodore's going to be here the day after I buy a
A4000 or A1200 from them…
There's always that rumour about 3.1 coming out for the older machines.
Maybe that would ride me through the next few months? We'll see…

But remember that Mosaic requires AmigaDOS V3.x whereas Gopher does not.
Also, Graham Walter's AmigaGuide based Gopher can handle some of the WWW
(HTML) files, though nothing is really is "pretty" as Mosaic can be (at
this point in time).

Mosaic does not require 3.0. Version 1 did, and viewing pictures does,
but the most recent (beta?) does not.

Mosaic1_2beta WILL work with AmigaDOS V2.x – that is true, though it also
requires muimaster.library. I just didn't want a general comment about
Mosaic to be misconstrued as implying that ANYone could use AMosaic.
You mean that the beta V1.2 AMosaic won't allow the use of external
graphics viewers that work under AmigaDOS V2.x, but instead, requires
AmigaDOS V3.x ?? If THAT is true, I certainly hope it is changed since
Mosaic for other platforms ALways uses external viewers, as far as I know.

Any of the Internet "Aminet" sites should have Graham Walter's AmigaGuide
based Gopher client for AmiTCP, in the comm/net subdirectory. I don't know
if it has also been uploaded to CIS.
