Anyone…
I am new to this computer stuff, and I really would appreciate some help. A
friend gave me this old Amiga 1000 a couple of weeks ago. I sought help the
other day, and I am happy to rwport that I got it, with downloading a program
to use to view weather maps. I downloaded a weather map.
My problem…well, I don't know how to view them. And I don't know enough to
figure out how to find out through this system. And, I am not certain what
capabilities my monitor has. I assume that it is a standard Amiga monitor. I
don't know how many colors it has…I mean, it's blue now. I do not know what
the resolution is, how many colors it has, or anything else about it. It is a
color monitor. It is an Amiga monitor. It is a model 1080.
Can anyone please take the time to respond to me about this? I would really
appreciate it.
Also, (and I know that all of you are probably pretty tired of me by now, and
that this is asking someone alot) I am in need of a good word processing
program that I can use on this system. My system is an Amiga 1000 with a 1080
monitor. I do not have a printer yet, and would also (here we go again)
appreciate some advice on a printer that would be compatable with this system,
at a modest price, of course.

(I believe her name is Betty) Betty, your advice on loosing the caps was wall
taken as you might notice if you read this…Thanks.

First you probobly need to unarchive your GIF viewer program. If the
extension is LHA or LZH, you will need LHA138.RUN which is self extracting
and available here on the Amiga forums. After your program is unarchived
running the program most likely will come up with a requester, then just
find the directory where your graphic is.
The A1000 and 1080 is what I am using right now. The 1080 is capable of
RGB and NTSC video. The 1000 can produce a high of 32 colors in high res,
or 4096 colors in low res which is called the HAM (hold and modify) mode.
Current Amigas surpass this by quite a bit.
As for word processing I have liked Final Copy and is designed to work
with AmigaDOS 1.3 or higher. So there should be no problem running on your
A1000 assumming you have 1.3. I have used the Panasonic series printers
and got good results with Final Copy. When you get a printer you will need
a special printer cable for the 1000. The parallel port on the 1000 is non
standard. Redmond Cable is a good place to check, if you can not find one
locally.
As for the keyboard, sometimes blowing the dust out from between the keys
might help.

Hello dear Amiga newbie! You're most definitely headed in the
right direction with your Amiga100 by just being here.
From the trouble you're having the arrow keys it sounds like you're
visiting the forum interactively. Just as soon as you get your
balance with the A1000 you'll want to get a copy of AutoPilot.
But first things first… to view the weather maps. <hmmm>
I've not taken the opportunity to view weather maps so I don't know
if I can help you. (Betty and others give far better directions
than I.) You may need to get a shareware program to view GIF files.
The one I use is called FASTGIF_II_v1.09. I am sorry that I cannot
help you locate it because I have forgotten from which library it was
downloaded.
Anyway, I just wanted to say hi! and encourage you to keep on
asking questions. The folks in this forum are incredibly patient
and helpful in guiding new users through the learning curve. Hang
in here– you'll get it.

Autopilot will allow the viewing of weather maps and GIF's for that
matter. I love this program.

True, Michael – and I suspect Vicki can do that because she has a newer
machine that can use AutoPilot. But Ken is using an A1000, which cannot
use the 2.x OS that is required for AutoPilot – at least, not without
extra boards, etc.

(Yeah) I thought I read that in one of the files that goes with
the latest version of AP (1.72?). Unfortunately for me, I didn't
install it correctly so it doesn't do all the neat things it's
supposed to. I guess I'll just wait till the next release and
read the directions before doing the transfer thing. <g>

Do you still have the AP archive? If you do try uncompressing it to
your RAM disk and install it again. The latest version AP 1.72 and it
really is quite good. You mentioned the transfer procedure. Are you a
registered user of AP? If you are you can get the special registration
E-Mail sent to you again if you trashed yours accidentially. Good Luck
and we hope to see you AP'ing with the rest of us soon. Directions ALMOST
always help.

What AP archive? The file I downloaded –the .lha one? Sure, it's
on a floppy.
Yes, I'm a registered AP user and I know I can get the registration
thing sent via e-mail, but I didn't loose the registration. BTW,
I really appreciated the announcement of that courtesy in the READ ME
file –quite nice, I thought.
<phooey> I *am* still AP'ing here (and elsewhere)! My copy just doesn't
have any of the fancy buttons I see in the files. Looked at them
through DOpus. There _are_ supposed to be new buttons with this
version aren't there?

Yeah! That's the one. Delete your older version of AP and decompress
the archive on to your RAM: disk. Install AP from the RAM: disk. I've
done this before and it works fine. Then you need to get that magic
registration bullet from APForums and then all should be working properly
in theory. Hopefully you do not have anything of importance in your older
AP and it won't make any difference.

Your message reminded me that I'd overlooked to update the copy of AP
on my 2nd Amiga so I did that today. This time I did it with the
the install gadget. Everything went well but I am a little disappointed
in that I don't see the new icons. I can't figure out where the
icons in the help file come into play. Do you happen to know?

I believe the icons you are referring to are the pictures that are
included with the new help system (APASSIST). When you hit the help key
it will trigger the help system and you will see pictures if the situation
matches the predefined scenario. I guess what I am trying to say is that
the help system is context sensitive <g>. So with that in mind as soon as
you are finished reading this message press the HELP key and see if that
is what you've been missing.

Oh? <peering at the keyboard> <duh!> I didn't think of pressing the
help key….<g> Anyway, I just tried it on this machine and
nothing happens. I didn't expect it to since it's not installed
properly… but the copy on the upstairs Amiga should so I'll go
up there and check it out. (Later –can't now because the room
is occupied by sleeping people.)

Just to add what others have already said….
You say the screen color is "blue". Do you mean everything has a blue
color to it? If so, check all the cable connections to the back of the
monitor. If everything isn't plugged in correctly, that could be the
problem.

You need a file viewer in order to display your weather maps. They are in
GIF format, so any GIF viewer will do it. I suspect you are using version
1.3 of the OS on your 1000, so you will need one of the older viewers. I
was always partial to ViewTek. You will find it in Library 14 of
AmigaArts forum. It will be archived, so that will also require that you
have LHA138.RUN from Library 16 of AmigaUser in order to unpack it.
LHA138.RUN is self-dissolving. That means that you put it in your current
directory and type its name in a CLI or shell, and it will unpack itself.
After it is unpacked, copy the LHA file to your c: or Tools: directory,
and put the rest on a floppy. You will need to read the doc file so
you'll know how to use it.
After you have LHA, then you can unpack the viewer file and put ViewTek in
either C: or Tools:. After that, to view the maps, just type
VIEWTEK filename.
There will be a doc file in the ViewTek archive, too, and it will tell you
of many features the program has.
With the A1000, you can use any parallel printer, but you will need a
special cable for it. Also, if you watch the Classifieds here, you will
see ads for word processors. The greatly maligned Word Perfect for the
Amiga is quite usable. We're just mad at them because they never really
developed a version that used all the abilities of the Amiga. But if you
can locate a copy of it, it will work well on your machine.
Your A1000 probably has either a 1070 or 1084 monitor with it. Those
usually display in 600 x 200 format, but can also display 600 x 400 if in
interlaced mode. Did you get manuals with your computer? If so, they
will anser many of your questions. If not, ask away. We'll be glad to
help all we can.
