Does anyone know if the announcement today from Hitachi about setting up a new company in the UK has anything to do with C=? I read in the CIS Online Today that Hitachi is serious about getting into the microcomputer market… the timing and location seemed a little coincidental.

I don't think so… This is what I hear from CEI: The liquidation arrangements will take about another 4 weeks, what with the courts and all, after which bidding will really begin, and the only serious bidder in the U.S. at any rate is CEI. Supposedly, they're talking money in the neighborhood of $13 million for technology and rights, and plan to manufacture new Amigas and continue R&D into the next generation. Fact or fiction or moot I don't know. Paul

That sounds sensible, as opposed to a lot of cr*p floating around here lately (Lord knows I have contributed my fair share). I just thought it was weird Hitachi would announce something like that right now, and I had read a rumor in this forum about them scheming some castle-in-the-sky buy-out… it's pretty bad when the company goes broke and nobody (with money) wants to buy the important/good parts. $13m? Where'd you get that figure?

$13mil came from CEI apparently. My dealer, who I trust, talked to them early this morning (Monday morning) and that's what they said. It's not as harsh as I'd feared, but still it's only a small part of the investment necessary to really do the job. Paul

Yeah, but jeez, you'd figure some other company that's a little healthier would take the risk for a _mere_ 13 mil (heh heh – like I have that much just lying around in old shoe boxes).

13 million sounds low. Also without any attempt to hire the lions share of the technincal team, I don't see how they intend to continure R&D without serious schedule slip (like 2-3 years before a new Amiga hits the bircks). Also, based on past communiques with their dealers, I would hazard a guess that their topmost priority in even announcing a thing like this is to keep the buyers comming so they can continue selling any Amigas they can lay their hands on. The other thing is that, based on the "civil" way the shareholder movement and dealers were treated at the last annual meeting, I thing all the arrangements had already been made and the pies cut up. I think the only way a new player gets in the act is if one of the old ones drops out or fails to get the financing necessary to buy. wmc – via Autopilot!

Probably true. We'll all just have to wait and see. Paul
