I wonder how many Amiga projects have been influenced by similar
experiences? Hummm, I wonder if this is what has happened to that "super
spreadsheet" program I have been waiting for over a year now?

I don't know. In my case I was going to it just for something to do (I get
bored easily). When I was told of an impending commericial release of
something similar I decided the niche was filled and there was no need for me
to spend a year or more on a shareware project. (Hey Michael, want you Quicken
back?).
As for the spreadsheet, I can't speak about that because I don't know. It is
very close to release. The last beta I got from the author was on the 30th of
April (Commodore's liquidation announcement was what, the 29th?). I would
assume that after all this time, work, money, and effort, it will be released
… but I haven't asked (lately).

I believe(d) I had uploaded a demo disk of the award-winning "TurboCalc
v2.0" spreadsheet program for the Amiga. Come to think of it, I don't
believe I actually saw the file in these hallowed halls… Was called
"TCALC.DMS" if I remember right. Was even in english but missing some of
the demo files which are on the german demo disk (even a spreadsheet for
you to play "4 in a row" with!). Shall I compose another disk and u/l it
or is it actually here???

I don't think "TurboCalc v2.0" is the spreadsheet I have been patiently
waiting for, especially since I just learned another beta version was
released a little while ago!
"Award-winning" sounds intriguing. Is there a synopis of "TurboCalc
v2.0" features available (ARexx support, math functions, charting
capabilities, etc…)? I would like to know these before downloading a
huge demo file 🙂

Pardom me for jumping in.
I am using TurboCalc v2.0 (German version) since a half year at buisness
and I am very content with it. The program is not as good as Excel 4.0
but it is very userfriendly, fast (speed is always relative) and it has
a lot of useful basic functions and a very good AREXX support too(in my
opinion). TurboCalc 2.0 supports KICK/WB 3.0 almost perfectly.
There are a lot of Finacial Management commands too.
TC 2.0 can read MS Excel, Professional Calc, CSV and ASCII files.
The only disadvantage is that the printout of TurboCalc diagramms
are not as good as printouts with PageStream (<grin>).

Thanks for the input Franz! I especially appreciate any comments from
someone that actually uses the product, and in your case particularly so
because you are counting on it in a business. I personally have not seen
any signs of TurboCalc v2.0 here in the US, neither local dealer nor
mail-order advertisements. Do you know if there is an English version
available? Maybe I should just checkout the demo….

As far as I know there is an English version available.

I have already read the message from Werner to Christian, in which he
claims that TurboCalc crashs very often, but I didnt have these problems.
(maybe not enough memory ?!?)
I have an Amiga 1200 with Blizzard turboboard (68EC030), 4 MB fast memory,
harddisk, multiscan monitor etc.
My version of TC is 2.05d and 100728 bytes long (packed by TurboImploder).
If I were you I would checkout the demo version.
BTW what would you like to do with Turbocalc exactly ?

Hmmm… wish I'd thought of that. I just ordered Pro Calc 2 AGA (for my A4000)
to handle my portfolio info.

You can checkout the demo version too.
Turbocalc is much cheaper than Pro Calc AGA, isnt it ?

Thanks for the info! I am looking for a "well rounded" general purpose
spreadsheet to support a small business adventure (tracking hours,
materials, costs, etc.) that has active technical support available. I
also would like to use it to track some personal investments. Thankfully,
not all my investments have gone the way my Comodore stock has gone 🙁

I believe that TurboCalc is th right program for you 🙂
BTW is Commodore really bankruptcy and the produktion of Amiga computers
finished ? Some people claimed that Samsung bought Commodore.

"award-winning" refers to the award TurboCalc 2.0 received as "Best
Spreadsheet software for the Amiga" by German mag AmigaPlus. Some time ago
I posted such a sysnopsis in these hallowed halls but that's probably
rolled off the forum by now…
TC has about 140 functions, all(!) of them accessable via ARexx. Yes,
it does charting (incl. proportional scaling), line, bar, pie diagrams,
also in 3D; any special math functions you need?
Anyway, the demo disk's size is pretty small for such a program (I
believe it was only about 150K…).

PMFJI, I installed the TC demo last week from the CoverDisk of AmigaPlus.
I agree with you, it's a very good looking excel-type piece of s/w.
But alas, when playing with that beast, I would 3 of 5 tries get a
software error when quitting the program because of corrupted memory.
So, alas, the program is absolutely useless for serious applications.
OTOH, unreliability and crashing of s/w is very common with many other
Amiga products (ProPage, DynaCadd, BeckerText…). This is the main reason
for the Amiga not having made it's way into business use.
Sometimes I think I am the only developer who is enforcering and
mungwalling his programs, on different hardware configurations, prior to
release. My customers (and the tax offices) would not allow any excuse for
a financial management program like bookkeeping or payroll s/w to crash,
leaving them with unreliable results.

I don't need any "special" math functions at the moment, but I can see
some future applications that I might want to apply some trig functions to
data held in the spreadsheet. Of course with a good ARexx interface, I
could do these through ARexx so it may not be important!
If I have been following the message traffic here correctly, I do not
believe the demo has been posted, so could you be so kind (I sure hope the
demo is in English, I don't think I could afford the telephone costs to
have my mother translate! 🙂
