I was just listening to my Peter Gabriel "So" album and heard a song that would
be great for a demo tape. It is the last song on side 2 called "This is the
Picture".
It starts out to the effect of . . .
flying birds
excellent birds
watch them fly, there they go [vision flocking IPAS]
falling snow
excellent snow
here it comes, watch it fall [vision many of particle IPAS]
[ . . . ]
this is the picture, this is the picture [vision almost any IPAS]
[ . . . ]
I see picture of people, rising up
pictures of people, falling down [people libraries, oscar]
Well, I guess you will just have to listen to the song and see/hear for
yourself.

"This is the Picture" is also on Laurie Anderson's "Mr. Heartbreak"
album under the title "Excellent Birds" — it was a collaberation
between PG and LA — I like it quite a bit!
I'd recommend everyone go out right now and pick up a bunch of Laurie
Anderson and Peter Gabriel and JR&The Modern Lovers albums to listen
to whilst playing with the YOST disks 6&7 which arrived yesterday!

Yeah, LA's been deep in electronic/computer gadgetry for a long time, and it
makes sense that PG and she would collaberate on something. There was an
interview w/ her in WIRED a couple issues ago — she's setting up for a new
album and tour — I'm looking forward to that — her show's are always funny,
provolking and entertaining.

Nice thought, but have you considered the cost for using the song? Copyrighted
material (especially the quality of Peter Gabriel's) can get quite costly,
unless you are using it for a public service, and even then it could easily run
over $1,000 for use. On that note (pardon the pun), does anyone have any good
references for music that can be purchased for video production? I am looking.
I would love to use a few songs already produced for some of my animations.

You'd be surprised about music rights. I know that of several instances where
usage rights were adjusted to the budget of the production, even though the
artists were very high profile, big money, etc…
As in anything, the key is in the approach. I've gotten rights to use
published music, and I approached it like buying a car. I refuse to pay
sticker price (on anything, for that matter). I'm sure not everyone is willing
to deal on copyrights, but I haven't found one yet that won't.

As far as music goes, I think there is a collection of CDs called OMNI. They
have much of the music from "The Minds Eye" collection. I also hear that stuff
on the weather channel quite often. Licencing fees are very affordable for
tunes on these CDs.
I will let you in on a secret. I get my sound done from a local band. They
need the exposure, and I need the sound. They use all synth stuff with sound
designer 2 on a mac. They try to avoid sampled loops so their work sound good.
