Interesting wrinkle on Samsung I discovered today. A fellow called me at
MegageM today and wanted an A1200 (along with zillions of others who can't get
one). Anyway, this guy is a rep for the (what, you say?) Sinclair QL computer
in the US. It is still a popular item in Europe. The Sinclair QL is VERY
closely related to the Amiga. The operating system came from the same source
as AmigaDOS. It multitasks, the macroassembler is IDENTICAL to the original
Amiga macroassembler, etc. Not that it's great, just a point which helps point
out the link which few Amiga folks know between the QL (I owned one a few years
back for a while) and the Amiga. Anyway, guess what? Who now manufactures the
QL? SAMSUNG. This guy buys his QL's directo from the Samsung factory in Korea
or Samsung Germany. Interesting little tidbit from out of the blue. Maybe
Samsung is ready for a step up in computing tech- nology and because of the QL,
they already have experience with a technology very closely related to the
Amiga. This was the n related to any of the rumors
which seemed to lend an independent bit of credibility. Samsung either bought
or licensed the rights to make QL's at some point from Sinclair.
Interesting…. I sure hope somebody keeps making Amigas, etc. The best thing
anyone could do is make an Amiga plug-in board for the PC. It'd sell zillions
of units. PC folks could FINALLY have an inexpensive way to do REAL video
animation, etc. instead of brain-dead (from the video point of view) VGA and
VGA to video converters. Perhaps someone could make an A1200-type board which
would plug into the PC ….?

That QL thing is a VERY long shot to find a Samsung link. The QL has been dead
in the water, as far as Europe/UK is concerned, for a LONG time. You ask 90% of
computer users in the UK what a QL is and they'll say "A what?" If Samsung
wanted a springboard from the QL into other computer technologies they would
have acted years ago.

For what it's worth, here is the text from a respected UK trade
publication called MicroScope (dated 18/5/94);
Samsung, Amstrad and HP sniff at Commodore.
Samsung and HP are believed to be collaborating on a deal to buy
technology from Commodore International, which put itself into liquidation
two weeks ago. Amstrad has also confirmed an interest in the company
which continues to trade.
the _FACTS_ all seem to point towards Samsung in some form or another, but
lets wait until an OFFICIAL announcement eh?

Interesting; I also had a QL before getting my Amiga and abandoned it
mostly because the required PAL-UK monitor was expensive but it was a step
up from C64 at the time. Never imagined they were still manufactured!
So Samsung makes QL's and Amstrad bought out Sinclair computers, and
Amstrad is also supposedly interested in Amiga, HP wants to put AGA in
sittops and licensed PA-Risc to Samsung? Small world, after all.

Sure, but what would it get from the PC except maybe DC voltage? It would
be the flip side of a BridgeBoard in an Amiga 2000, and the argument has
been made many times that if we want PC compatibility we should buy a PC.
I think the PC people would be better off to buy the A1200 too. Of course
as a board in a PC clone it will gain dubious respectability in the eyes
of the Big Blue business users finally. What a sad commentary.
