#1.4 – 2.0 Troubles
2 messages in this thread
After having been stationed overseas for several years, I have returned
Stateside and have finally upgraded to 2.0 (2.04 w/ 2.05 rom). Now, very few
programs want to work correctly. Lots of crashes, and many programs load up
but have strange graphics problems. Ocassional crash messages seem to indicate
memory fragmentation problems. couple of examples… a newly purchased "Final
Writer" loads up, but various windows (eg ones asking for display type and file
requestors) are mangled and program soon crashes… "Perfect General" claims it
cannot find enough memory (system has 7 Megs ram) and suggests a fragmentation
problem in the "Sorry, but U R not going to play today" message… some of the
characters in "King's Bounty" look like sprites whose pointers have been poked
to the wrong memory location. Has anyone else out there run into similar
problems (and hopefully found solutions) back when they upgraded? I'm running
an A500 w/clock 1 Meg chip, 6 Megs Fast (on a Grand Slam), 105 Meg Quantum
hard, Microbotics VXL 30 (an initial timing conflict between the VXL 30 and the
Grand Slam has already been corrected by the folks at IVS)… I also have an
Archive Viper tape backup system hooked up (but not actually working yet –
anyone have a good driver for that??) via SCSI. help
If your using a 2.05 ROM in a A500, that is most likely the problem. I've
upgraded 2 A500's in the last month for customers and I tried a 2.05 ROM..no
go, unexplained crashes including Final Writer. I replaced the 2.05 with a 2.04
and no crashes. Both machines had ver. 5 motherboards If your machine is an
older revision, then you can bet the problem is the 2.05 ROM, no question. I
won't use 2.05 ROM's in A500's because of this. 2.05's do work just fine in
A2000's The only other thing to check is to see if all your RAM chips are
seated properly. This can cause programs like Final Writer, which use a lot of
RAM, to crash.
I hope this helps…
