#GPFax init string
24 messages in this thread
Can anybody help me with the GPFax init string to be used with a brand new
GVC FAX 14400 V.42bis?
It worked like a charm with AP at first attempt, just plug & play, but
with GPFax it's not the case. I've got a bundle of Mac s/w with it and a
Mac cable to use it with Emplant, but Mac s/w does not multitask as Amy
does.
Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have the latest GPFax (2.346)? If not, upgrade. It's gotten
pretty handy at adopting to different types of modems (unlike older
versions which had different disks for different modems!).

Thanks Dale for your prompt response.
I have GPFax version 2.015 (2.5.92) Supra modems ONLY. Maybe that's the
problem. I'll try to contact them. Their email adress is USENET
cbmvax!cbmaus!gpsoft!greg@uunet.uu.net
Do you know if I can send them a message via Internet? They are in
Australia!!!
Best regards

With that address, you might be able to reach them. I send/receive email
to/from Australia, Japan, Europe, etc. all the time. Unfortunately, many
developers on the Internet are having trouble receiving mail because of a
problem with a gateway that C= pays for…

Thanks for your help, Dale. I'll try to send them a message via
AP-CIS-Internet. I'll tell you the result, anyway, you might be
interested.

The GVC modem has a bug in it's implementation that makes high speed v.17
faxing almost impossible under class 2. It uses a propietary controller
and a Rockwell datapump. Also make sure you are using a firmware version
later than 1.63. Use this for your INIT string – it forces a 9.6k max
transmit/receive for fax.
AAT&FE0V1X4&K3&C1&D2+FDCC=,3S0=0
That should work, if not let me know what is happening.. what exactly is
failing. Also get the following info from a terminal program:
ATIx where x=0-6
AT+FCLASS=?
AT+FMFR?

Rafael… Please let me break in for a moment… I too have been
unsuccessful in getting GPFAX to recognize my modem and therefore am
following this thread with some interest… To help you get some
answers (and indirectly solve my own problem)…
when you listed your at+fclass= and at+fmfr responces… you left off the
"?" at the end… the correct requests are
at+fclass=?
and
at+fmfr?
good luck
Thanks Albert.
Jonathan Blackwell is beeing extremely helpful with this. He has suggested
me the same in other message. Keep following the thread… and let's see.
I never wanted to be a modem language expert! 8-(

Make sure that you aren't using a Supra specific version of GPFax, I have
heard that to cause problems on other modems. Also make sure you are
using v2.4x and later.

First of all, thanks for your help, interest and expertise, Jonathan.
Answering your two messages in one go:
Unfortunately, when clicking "About" I get:
GPFax version 2.01S
Supra modems ONLY
I've sent a message to USENET cbmvax!cbmaus!gpsoft!greg@uunet.uu.net
asking for the latest upgrade last saturday. I keep my fingers crossed.
The result of your correction (and Albert Brendel correction as well) is:

OK
at+fclass=?

OK
at+fmfr?

OK
Hope this helps you, me, and Albert. Anybody else? 😎
Thank you very much again

Great.. we now know that your GVC modem is both class 1 and 2. We also
know that you have fairly recent firmware. The next thing to do is to get
your software updated. There are a series of patches for both the Generic
GPFax software as well as the Supra specific software. If you update your
software up to at least 2.4x, you will see dramatic improvements including
the ability to use the Supra specific version with other class 2 modems.
These patches are available here on Compuserve (can't remember which
forum) and on the Supra BBS.
Make sure that in your setup you do not have any Silent Answer Supra
specific options selected… I think it is listed as a selectible mode in
the Options screen. Have it say FAX ONLY if not already set that way.
Also, let us know what error numbers if any are being generated in the
Reports log.

You mention version 2.4x of GPFax. I've only seen patches up to 2.342
(which I'm currently running). Where can I get the latest patches you
speak of?
Fred
My mistake, that should have read 2.34x.

Thanks for your reply Jonathan.
I got G201S.LZH from comms library, AUser, followed the instructions and
updated to 2.341 supra modems only. That was the latest version available.
The FAX OLY has been set up as well… but no success yet. 8-(
No error numbers, just Result MODEM.
Where is the 2.4x update patch??? Can I patch GPFax from SUPRA version to
GENERIC version? Any suggestion about GPFax tooltypes? What to do now?
Thanks again for your kindness and help.

That should have read 2.34x.
If the error indicates modem, that might mean that the modem is not
switching to fax mode. Try adding this command to your init string
(somewhere after &F) +FCLASS=2

In despite of your interest and expertise, this thing is not working yet
(but it will, we're trying hard)
GPFax v2.341 default init string: AAT&F2E0
Init string now: AAT&F2E0+FCLASS=2 (following your suggestion)
With both strings, the logfile says "Result:MODEM". No success yet.
Thanks for your help, Jonathan.

Rafa,
Seems there were problems with GPFax v2.341 v2.342 and v2.01 etc in that
they would not recognize older fax modems (and wierd brand versions as
well). The latest is GPFax v2.346 which seems to have corrected this
problem which I got from my Amiga dealer who DMS'd the whole file and UL'd
it to me. It has the new install routine in which you can differentiate
between class1 modems and class2 modems as well as modem type and init
strings.

Surprise! It's Great Trent again!
Thank you very much for your interest, Trent. Do you now how can I get
that wonder? I mean v2.346. The d***** thing is not working yet!!!!!
I sent a message to GPSoftware in order to upgrade my GPFax version to the
latest one, but no response yet!

Get rid of the 2 following the &F command.

One more time, thanks, Jonathan.
Got rid of the 2 following the &F command.
Result: init string AAT&FE0+FCLASS=2
Guess what GPFax 2.341 Supra 27.6 says now.
Where is the modem????????????????????????
As usual, in the logfile, Result MODEM
Sorry.

>> software up to at least 2.4x,
The absolute newest version is only 2.346 (available through Micro R&D). The
newest available through patches is only 2.342. Greg Perry never released any
patches newer then that.
Alex – Supra Technical Services
You're right, my mistake.

When entering the command
AT+FCLASS=?
you must enter the question mark.. this for the command
AT+FMFR?
as well. Note that the second command does not have an equal symbol.
With this, we can find out more about your modem.
