Has anyone had any success modelling diamonds in 3DS3? If possible I need to create (or fake) the complex reflections/refractions that occur. I know 3DS3 doesn't ray trace so would I be better off modelling in 3DS and using POV for the final render? Any tips and tricks would be most appreciated.

Good question, and unfortunately I don't have the answer… However, in a past life (b.g.) I used to be a diamond appraiser & would be curious to see what you come up with. -scott lawrence- btw, Don't use a C.Z. as a model! They refract light much differently than a diamond. Also, diamonds should have 58 facets…F.Y.I.

I did this video for a client a year ago called Jewelry Making for the hobbiest. I created a diamond ring animation for the opening logo treatment. I gave the faces of the diamond (classic shape) 5% automatic reflection maps for flat mirrors. I put colored omni lights inside the diamond just behind each cusp. I used 10 blue lights, 5 red lights 5 green lights and 3 yellow lights. I used IPAS hilite cross stars on the cusps as the diamond rotated. The client was very pleased with the effect. The diamond floated and tumbled in as the parts of a gold ring and mounts all fell into place over a sunset sky background. I know it wasn't technically accurate because I don't know anything about diamonds except they are hard, made of carbon and are expensive. <g>

I created a diamond usind a double hull, the inside diamond having it's faces flipped to the inside and 100% reflective and the outside diamond slightly less auto reflecting.

Thanks Mark and everybody else who has replied to this thread. I've got some useful pointers. Now all I have to do is lock myself away from all humanity for 48 hours and do some experimenting! Thanks again – Andrew

Yep, I thought this might be the case. I've used POV before for some effects I couldn't easily create in 3DS. I would love to see the effect you got though. Regards – Andrew
