I read that the 486 setup for Emplant will be available in late June.
Will UU be selling a version of Emplant that comes _with_ the required
chips? Or will users still have to track down chips themselves? Any
guess as to how much an Emplant with 486 operability will cost?

When I spoke to UU about a chip problem I was having the subject got
around to the 486 set. The response was that the end of June, "a chip"
along with the necessary S/W, and around $100 would be about right. Now,
any and all of that may change, but that was their info about ten days
ago. Hope that helps

The 486DX emulation module requires *NO* additional hardware or chips for it to
function, although you can use your favorite BIOS if you would like to.. it
will be slower as our own BIOS is written in native 680×0 code.

If I purchased a board without the 486DX emulation, would I need to send the
board back if I later wanted it, or would it be a simple software install that
you could mail me?

The 486DX emulation will be a combination of new software and logic chips
that would be upgradeable by the end-user. The PC emulation with new
chips and software is to priced around $100 as of now… prices subject to
change.

I've heard two stories–yes, there will be new logic chips and software, and

The chip, as I understand it, is only BIOS. You can use your favourite,
or use UU's, which will be far faster as it is written in 0x0 machine
code. The software is the rest.

The logic chips are UU's form of copy protection. The product is in
reality only a software update.

All I want is the PC emulator. Question… will I be able to buy a PC
Emplant package or do I have to buy a Mac emplant and then purchase the PC
upgrade for an additional $100? I have no interest in the Mac end of it.
Also, I have a 68EC030 (no MMU). I have seen reports that the MMU is not
required, but is recommended. Is the difference significant enough that I
should start looking at a new 68030 chip?

The MMU significantly improves video performance. I mean significantly!
It also makes a difference to have fast 32bit RAM (plenty of it)
Whether or not you will have to buy the MAC and PC packages independantly,
I do not know.

The Emplant board is not a Mac emulator until you add a Mac rom image to it.
The answer to your question is "yes", you will have to buy the board plus the
PC emulation package. Mac users have to buy the board plus obtain Mac roms.
I have been surprised to realize that since I got my Emplant up and running I
probably spend more time on the Mac than on either the PC or Amiga.

I understand that. Mac doesn't multitask, but most of the best
productivity s/w available comes originally from Mac side, I'm sorry to
tell.
But at the end of the day, Macs are slower, more expensive, and cannot
emulate the Amiga. (Before PPC)

Because? Are the applicatons for the Mac that great, or do they take more
time to use, or are they just the new toy to be explored right now? I use
all three platforms and both Windows3.1 and Mac leave me feeling like I
just stepped back to an Amiga500 running WorkBench 1.3
