Hello! We in this forum section include a wide variety of earth science
interests, from professional to novice hobbyists. Here you will find
collectors of minerals, fossils, rocks, and so on, with lapidaries, geologists,
teachers, and more. We have been trading information and specimens. We are
looking for new participants!
If you do not find any topics on this message board that sound like your
interests, read them all anyway. Due to wandering conversations, at times you
would have found fluorescent minerals discussed in the 'turtle fossils' topic,
radioactive minerals discussed in the 'rockhound forum' topic, and other
surprises. Feel free to jump into any discussion with questions or comments –
if we did not want other people joining in, we would use private E-mail.
Whether or not you find people sharing your interests, post a message
introducing yourself. Tell us what subjects you are interested in, what you
might like to learn/buy/sell/trade, and where you are. Someone you do not see
here may answer; that is how this recent burst of activity started! Or one of
us may know something about your field that does not show in the other
messages. Don't make it a reply to this message (let's try to keep one topic
name honest!); start a new topic hinting at your field of interest.
If you find this group too small to be of much interest, stick around and be
active anyway! We just got the snowball rolling in late August '92, and like
to think that there are many potential new members out there. Your activity may
attract more passers-by, especially those who share your interests more closely
than we do.
At present, messages are lasting roughly 6 days on this message board, though
there was one time when messages lasted only 3-4 days.
In this section's library 12 you will find mineral databases, rockhounding
documents, messages from the Internet, Mineral News digests, and trade/sale
lists.

I'm very new to CIS and leaving messages. Have a variety of Earth Science
related interests, having collected minerals since the 4th grade, fossils since
high school, meteorites for the past 5 years. Looking forward to being
somewhat active in this forum. Still very slowly trying to expand my fossil
and meteorite collections. Not much opportunity to go hunt my own fossils here
in Hawaii (roughly 5 million years old geologically). Meteorites have had to
be thru painful correspondences with dealers and fellow collectors when I can
find them… If anyone wants to learn geology, I'd try learning it thru
Robert Dodd's meteorite book, THUNDERSTONES AND SHOOTING STARS, as it really
touches a lot of the basics of Earth and Planetary Science in a thoroughly
enjoyable, very readable fashion.

Welcome to the forum!
I am mainly interested in fluorescent minerals, but as a sometime amateur
astronomer, I find meteorites of particular interest also. I bought a couple
of my half-dozen meteorite specimens from Al Mitterling (71540,3657), a more
serious collector, who turned up in this forum a while back. I do not know how
often he looks in here these days, since there seem to be few meteoritophiles
on CIS; if your message here does not get a rise from him, you might try
CISmailing to him.
What sort of minerals have you found in Hawaii? Nathan may be interested to
hear of the zeolites I imagine are the big minerals out there.

Hello Doug and Joseph,
Joseph made mention of his interest in meteorites in the astroforum and I gave
him a response. I would be interested in knowing a little about his collection
like how big, what types, any unusual kinds, what classes he has or needs etc.
I would be glad to share (gloat <G>) information about my collection like my
fourty one pound Gibeon I just recently bought or the Reid 13 brachinite I have
in which only four pounds of this material exist in the entire world!

Hi, Al and Joseph–
The Internet mail-list rocks-and-fossils (described in INTERN.TXT in this
forum's library) just saw another burst of activity regarding meteorites;
copies of the recent messages follow (the earlier such burst is in RM0005.ARC
and RM0006.ARC, still in the library, I think). I passed Al's E-address to Ed
just now via the list.

Robert Haag is the person from I purchased a specimen of the Canyon
Diablo meteorite (the Arizona crater). He has also supplied several specimens
for a friend of mine. All were nice-sized and as he represented them. I
haven't seen anything about him in the last couple of years, but the address I

I think Robert Haag was at Tucson in February, so he still seems to be in
business. Also, a relative of his (brother or sister, I think) has written a
recent article in one of the rockhound mags (LJ, Rocks & Mins, or Rocks and
Gems) and mentioned Robert. He seems to have a good reputation as a dealer. I
think he also advertises in one or more of the mags listed above, so if the
address supplied by the earlier respondent is no longer current, it should be
easy to obtain one that is.
