Odds are you have purchased Pentiums equipped with MGA or equally
shameful Windows accelerators. A number of manufacturers have begun skimping
on DOS and VESA modes, which results in slow / non-existent support for movies
and multimedia games.
If you do have an MGA (Matrox) and cannot return it, you can purchase
additional VGA cards ($100 tops) and disable the MGA's VGA emulation. This
allows the computer to find your $100 VESA card before using your $500 SVGA
card.
If you need details, let me know via e-mail.
I hate to tell you this, but the MGA kicks serious butt in 3D Studio.
With some of the IPAS' of the future needing 24bits to be best
(real-time preview), and hardware assisted 3D real-time (MGA I
Impression), the MGA is an excellent card for 3DS. The only thing it
sucks for is dos games.
For MGA support in 3DS, just download the latest vibrant update from
this forums library, install it, delete the 3dadi.cfg file, type 3ds
vibcfg at teh dos prompt, and choose the MGA card that fits the bill,
as well as the resolutions you want. EXCELLENT performance.
Are you *_SURE_* you don't work for Matrox <BG> ?
I don't work for matrox, but I do like their hardware a lot. I'm so
excited about being able to use the MGA again (I bought it a month
before R3 came out, and it hasn't been supported in R3 untill very
recently). And I'm really jazzed about Sandra… in case you
couldn't tell <g>.
You want to come over and get my Impression 1024 working in 3ds? <g>

He he he… Impression, huh? That's a S3 card, I believe. Matrox is
kind of dropping the ball on that product – no more software revs.
That's one of Matrox' weaknesses, they don't seem to have the
resources to support all their cards, but the Impression is quite
outdated at this point. Their new stuff is top of the heap, though,
and they are supporting it with admirable tenacity. They've got a
forum section here on Cserve, and response times are almost as good
as this forum.

So what makes you think they're going to support their current cards any more
than they supported their "old" (one year) cards?
– Jack
Matrox' new cards will probably have a life span of 18mos. or so, when the next
slew of 128bit cards comes out, and when there are too many apps to write
drivers for they'll drop the ball. I don't care, because I'd rather get the
newer technology and better performance, but there ARE plenty of people who
don't share my view and I can completely understand that. Matrox is not the
company for peole who plan on using their graphics cards for more than a couple
of years. I am just grateful that one company isn't concerned with backward
compatibility at the expense of new stuff. There are plenty of other companies
that are very good at that. Actually, I heard that Matrox, after all, planning
on doing another set of drivers for the Impression 1024, but its days are
definitely numbered.

The Impression 1024 is an S3 911/924 card. We support it in 16/256 colors, but
not the true-color modes. Matrox developed this weird propritary system for
true-color on the S3 911/924 card, which we don't have any current plans to
deal with… Sorry.

Ah. Now that that's confirmed, I guess I can stop holding my breath. <g>
