#500 Vs 4000

To all,
I hope this is not a dumb question, but i would like to know if all of my
software for my A500 will run on an A4000. Since it appears that the low end
500/2000 will no longer enjoy ANY support, even with a new owner. Is the 4000
that much different from the 500/2000?

Yes…and no, but mostly yes. An apt anaolgy might be comparing a Chevette and
a Corvette. Both are made by Chevrolet. Both have four wheels and use gasoline.
Both can get you from point A to point B. You could gut the interior of the
Chevette and install leather upholstry. You might also drop a high efficiency
V-8 engine and a rugged racing transmission into it. In some respects, the
Chevette would be more like the Corvette. BUT, it would still be a Chevette.
There is world of difference between a stock A500 (AmigaOS 1.3) and a stock
A4000 ( AmigaOS 3.0). As you upgrade the A500, these differences will become
less apparent. There are limits, however to upgrading (ie: no AGA upgrade
possible); and after all is spent and done, you will still have an A500.
Incidently, AGA aside, software compatability is more a function of the OS than
of the hardware. Many, if not most OS 1.3 era games do not survive well on OS
3.1 systems, be they A500 or A4000.

Thank's for the answers. I do have quite a few upgrades on my 500. I.E. 28MHZ
accelerator, 4.5 MEGS mem., DOS 2.1. I just wasn't sure if i could use all of
my programs on a new A4000 or not. Thank's again.:>)
If Escom does restart the A4000, Then i'll be first in line.

Badly written software will not. Mainly games. But newer AGA games are much
better, I suppose. And 500s cannot run AGA games!. You can always use degraders
and thinks like that!
