Wonder if Apple's PCI will be better than Intel's….
Intel supposedly has already admitted that the PCI bus is not fast enough
for heavy multimedia work. Supposedly they are at work on PCI-2 to obtain
the speed necessary.
(Maybe they should look into Zorro III. <grin>)

I wouldn't bet on it. (Version 1.0 hardware and driver software add up to a
real pain.)

Not to mention those nasty hardware bugs. I'm not really all that impressed
with the Intel labs lately. (Not that I was ever really enamored with Intel
stuff. 🙂 The Pentium bug is the only one that got press, but there's others.

You don't get it — maybe Andy Carroll should jump into this thread.
There is no "Apple's PCI" or "Intel's" PCI.
Intel came up with PCI (v1.0). It died (a LONG time ago).
The idea was basically sound but had some serious flaws. A group of
hardware manufacturers got together (including Intel, IBM, Apple) and
designed PCI v2.0. PCI v2.0 machines are shipping now. The bus is
very fast (20MB+ per second). Apple will start shipping their PCI
slot machines on June 19th when they ship the first of the 604 based
PowerSurge machines.
Wasn't aware that PCI v2.0 was already shipping. Last I heard Intel was
supposedly still working on the specs.
Guess what I should have said was I was wondering if the PCI bus in the
Apple machines would be 1.0 or the newer standard.
Even so, while the bus may be the same, the chips that control it, and the
implementation at the system level may not be.
Within the clone ranks there are marked differences in buss perfrormace
between various machines.
As I said, PCI v1.0 is dead and has been for years. If you want to
talk PCI you'll have to come up to speed on it. I recently attended
an Apple developer's seminar (Apple calls them "kitchens") to learn
to write drivers for PCI cards as the company I work for is
developing their own for high end imaging products.
