Hi, Jim.
No problems at my house, fortunately – for the storm was truly terrible. We had
sirens going a good part of the night, and the reports on TV were quite scary,
even to those of us who have lived in Texas for a very long time. At one time,
a tornado was reported to have been seen a few miles west of my house and
moving in my direction – but it moved up into the clouds and dissipated. The
heavy hail was supposed to be headed my way, too, but only a very few
hailstones hit my roof. The worst of the storm turned northward before
reaching this area.
The hailstorm was really terrible in Ft. Worth. It was especially bad for all
of the families who had taken their little children to the big spring festival,
MayFest. The sun was shining when they went, but then the clouds came up
quickly and literally exploded with violence, pelting them with hailstones
three to four inches in diameter. A few had broken bones, even! When the
MayFest was just getting started, I was one of those who helped get it started.
My daughter was in the Youth Orchestra at the time, and it was one of our major
fund-raising activities. I know that there is no cover at all out there except
for some big trees. It must have been terrible to be there with a little child
and no way at all to protect it.
Many cars in the area are almost destroyed. The Ft. Worth Police Department
had about 50 new patrol cars that were delivered only this week, and had less
than 50 miles on each, and almost every window and windshield is broken out,
and the bodies and roofs have deep dents made by the huge hailstones. The same
happened in the parking lot of the employees of one of our TV stations. Also,
there is a great deal of roof damage, many homes lost all or most of their
windows, and several businesses had their roofs actually collapse under the
weight of the water from the terribly heavy rains.
But in my own neighborhood, it is very wet, but there is no noticeable damage.
We were blest.

What's left of that storm is coming our way (Toronto) now, but only as a
couple of days of heavy rain.
Are you sending this stuff up as revenge for some of the arctic fronts we've
sent down your way? 🙂

Well, it would be selfish of us to keep it all to ourselves, wouldn't it? And
some of those arctic fronts are worthy of revenge. <g>
Last month was the wettest April on record here, and in the first six days of
May, we received almost twice the normal rainfall for the month. Parts of the
area received more than eight inches of rain in two days.

Hi Betty,
I'm home for a week, so turned on "Ramblings". Usually just view about of the
third of the sections.
Glad to hear that you survived the floods, but it looks as though New Orleans
got 15 inches of rain in 12 hours! Hope the storm has rained out before it
reaches Florida!
It would be interesting to have another 64+. I gave mine to my stepson and my
ex sold it and kept the money!
Last time I booted it, I thought that it was broken. I walked away and and a
few minutes later heard the music from "Ghostbusters"! (I was used to my '030)
I bought an A500 from Stephen Wagner from the classifieds here in January, and
just got a chance to check it out last night! It is the "vanilla" 1.3 version.
I got it just so that my daughter and I could play the old games.
Don't know if I'm enough of a gamer to try the new batch of games. Only have
20 years left in my life expectancy.
I was on a small cruise ship for a month starting with San Juan to Miami with
eleven days in between, then Miami to Seattle via the Panama Canal. It was very
relaxing. No television or radios, just books, good music, and even my laptop
slept a lot. (Is that why they call it Windoze?) <groan>
What's this about CIS dropping ASCII? Are we to be orphaned? Enquiring Minds
Want To Know!

Hey, take a few risks! 🙂 Not all the games out these days depend on quick
reflexes (I know, mine aren't all that quick anymore and I still find a game or
two here and there that keeps my interests) you know!
All work and no play gets awfully boring…:) 🙂

Some of us don't have the luxury of lying flat on our backs for days at a time!

Actually, the simpler games can eat up hours of time that I don't have! On
occasion, I even win! Just seems that the ones I've seen on CDROM etc. require
more dedication than I have time for. Now, if I hit that LOTTO! <G>

In my case, that should be turned around. I spend about 40 weeks a year on
cruise ships! (Another reason for the A500…small enough to take with me on
longer trips)
I assume that you have a back problem with the mention of relaxants. My
vertabrae finally collapse, so I no longer have that excruciating pain…just
constant ache!
Have obviously be reading your posts, and thanks for commenting on mine.
It's been years since I saw the Redwoods. Hope to bring my nine year old
daughter to see the awesome sight. I got as close as Seattle last week.

The storms have, indeed, been terrible.
The C64 was fun. It was pretty simple and easy to learn, and people did
awfully neat things with it. I have heard that the C65 was really good, but it
was never really released. But BOOT a C64? Everything was built into it, and
it didn't require booting. Of course, loading anything from the disk drive
took ages – but it was far faster than from a tape drive, so we didn't really
notice.
Your cruise sounds like a vacation – not work!
And on the dropping ASCII – I suspect it will happen some day, but probably not
any time soon. I cannot believe that CIS would cut off such a big part of
their business. There are many people here who do not use MSDOS or MacIntosh.
How about all those business customers who use Unix? And all the orphaned
8-bit machines who get ALL their support from CompuServe now?

How about that? I used it from the time it was introduced till '87 and always
thought starting it up was called booting. Whatever typing Load 8,1 or * was
called, it was slow! Think I told you that I got mine from Commodore in the
Bahamas for doing their convention at Paradise Island. I think I met Gould,
but couldn't be sure. It was at least the president of the company that gave
it to me. They'd just introduced the machine, had to pay duty to bring it in,
and (good old Bahamas) would have had to pay duty on it going out again!
It took a L O N G time to get software for it. Think I had friends order it,
then bring it in. Fun days.

Good news about us not being dropped. Steve answered that today, also.
I got my first "Phantom Mail" tonight. The 'M' was on, but when I clicked it,
the window opened with "No messages present or message is in unknown format"
I'd just sent an email via the internet.
Hope we don't get the storm. Did you see the photos of the twisters in
Illinois (I think) today. Sometimes I envy groundhogs!

Sorry to hear about your storms. We saw some of it on the TV and it looked
really frightening.
I know all about horrible storms and more water than one can deal with.
Here, on the Russian River (No California) we've flooded TWICE since New Years
and it was definitely NOT fun!

Fortunately, I was not affected by it all, other than the inconvenience of
power outages and sogginess – but it has been devastating to many in its path.
And the same system seems to be hitting the rest of the country this week.
One of the biggest problems in Texas is that people cannot seem to understand
how dangerous so much water can be. They drive right into deep water, and then
their cars are washed away. They drive into low underpasses, and the water
rises into their cars before they can get through. And some of them are
drowned because they just couldn't stay on high ground until the rain was over.
Such things as that could be prevented with a bit of forethought on the part of
drivers.
On the other hand, no one can predict – or get out of the way of – the
tornadoes, hail storms and such. The heavy rains kill people. The tornadoes
and hail damage property and send our insurance rates even higher. It seems
that our area has the rather dubious title of "Hail Storm Center of the US."
This week, our weather seems to have returned to normal: bright sun, temps in
the mid to upper 80's, and not a cloud in sight.

Have you heard of/stopped by Applied Computer Systems in North Highlands (north
of Sac)?
I'm a member of SACC but live in the Fairfield area and am tired of commuting
the distance for a meeting. So on a local Amiga BBS [Out of Order,
{707}427-8317, no I'm not kidding :)] I've finally hooked up with another local
user who is interested in starting a club in the southern Solano Co. area.
I'm looking for reasons that people DO NOT join/actively participate in a
computer club.
(Excuse me if I'm rambling, I just got off my 5th straight day of twelves, and
I'm a bit punchy)
Was going to post this private, but maybe their are some other No.Cal.
Amiganauts that might have some free time one Sat. and are close enough to
Sac(?) to get together and exchange some ideas.

Well, your storm wreaked havoc on New Orleans, Southern Miss. and Southern
Alabama today. I heard that New Orleans had 12+ inches of rain dumped on them;
and here in Mobile and especially Miss. we had Tornado warnings everywhere.

I've been hearing and reading about it. I'm sorry these storms didn't just
play out! Wouldn't wish such things on anyone. I suspect that a 12" rain in
New Orleans is truly disastrous.
