I'm getting a Targa 2000 and would like to hear from 2000 users about its pros
and cons. Already I'm having problems getting an EISA board, as good ones are
hard to find. Any suggestions? Also got any ideas about what I can do with my
old ISA VLB board? I've been told by 2 people that the Pentium doesn't work
well with the EISA board. Any experience out there? ie, Should I get a 486dx4
instead?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We're a Truevision dealer and have been using the T2000 in pentiums from TMC
and they work. I think I remember seeing a compatibility list from Truevison
also. I don't get on line too often so if your interested give me call during
business hrs and I'll see what add'l info I can find for you.

T2000 pros & cons: I suggest waiting if you can for the PCI version, or
even utilizing the Macintosh version. Currently, it is not that easy to
configure a PC for the throughput that the DVR architecture of the Targa 2000
allows.

What do you think about the T2K for the Mac? We are very seriously
looking for it, but we also feel like we have to wait for PCI. The
technical specs on the NuBus version are great, but still, we are
getting a new 9400 ASAP and we want any new boards to keep with the
new Apple boxes. An upgrade policy from Truevision could solve this
problem and would let us enjoy T2K now and in the future, but I don't
have recieved any info about this yet. Any advice that you can give
us will be greatly appreciated.

Truevision has been an interesting, though sad story, for the last 2-3
years. Rasterops tried to absorb them, or kill them off. Now, Rasterops is
flagging, and Truevision is their last hope. Their act is very slow getting
together. The T2000 Mac is a good product, and it's easier to get good
throughput with a fast drive & SCSI accelerator, without the overhead of
Windows. Problem is that Premier is the only current software solution readily
available on the Mac, and that ultimately isn't going to be enough. As for
upgrades, don't hold your breath. While there will be PCI versions, there will
probably NOT be an upgrade path for folks with NuBus boards. Accept that as it
is, or wait.

Either wait for the PCI version or try to find an answer to your video needs
elsewhere. The EISA version of the t2k is really limited by current software
and the software itself. The NuBus versions is a killer (and that's what we are
getting, but only if they offer an upgrade path to PCI). The PCI will do
wonders, but it still in development (read vaporware). Try to retrieve some
info and a demo from DPS and their new system as well. That really sounds
great.

1. Check out the Truevision forum (GO TRUEVISION); in the library is a file
which lists suggested hardware (fast HD's, for optimal T2K performance.

Saw theT2000 PCI board at NAB and the Truevision guys said (conseratively) it'd
be shipping around August or so and that they were still writing drivers,
waiting for the Win 95 drivers, etc. The board looks and performs wonderously
– up to CCIR601 quality and they plan to surpass that with new drivers in the
future.
Can barely wait for it!
Yow, Sounds great. I wonder why they've been keeping it so quite for so long.
The more research I do on EISA, the more of a problem it seems. So, I'll wait
for the (PCI) bus.

I was wondering why Truevision was being so quiet, too. At NAB, all their
competitors – Matrox, Fast Video, DVision, etc., – had these huge, splashy
booths touting their products. Truevision's wimpy little booth on the main
floor was tucked away in a corner somewhere. You had to ask explicitly about
the PCI version, THEN you were let into a tiny little room in the wimpy little
booth. Inside were a couple of T2000 techs answering questions about the
killer new PCI card. No pressure, no sales people, just very intricate tech
talk about a great product. When asked why Truevision wasn't being most
glitzy, they said "Because we're all back home working on the new card!" I
believed it.

What does Truevision think CCIR601 Specifications mean…..
720 x 486 or 720 x 480 ?

Truevision's preliminary specs show 720×486 for CCIR-601 for the
component versions – T2000 PRO.

The Targa 2000 works great for me. We're running it on a 486/66 EISA with
little trouble. The main problems I've had are with the gamma correction
settings. 3D Studio has two gamma settings–one sets the system gamma, the
other appears in video post for bitmap gamma. And then the Targa 2000 IPAS has
a third gamma setting. They all seem to work against each other, resulting in
too much subtle brightness in very dark areas of a scene. Truevision admitted
a bug in the T2K IPAS with regard to the gamma setting, but the "fix" release
didn't fix anything.
Thanks for the info. So what else is in the EISA system. I seem to need too
many slots for typical boards.
