Does anyone have any experience with new Toshiba 3401 Seems impressive on
spec 200 ms reads multiple photo cd is available with mac kit and or pc kit

Yeah, I'm interested too. But I'm most interested in whether it's backward
compatible with the 3301, and thus hopefully usable immediately with MS
Windows NT.

I have one on order (internal). It will ship end of February. I will try to
install it with an Always SCSI controller, may be using ASPI and CorelSCSI.
I did not get Toshiba's kit as I already have 4 SCSIs in my system
(SCANNER, COMPRESSION CARD, VIDEO CARD, HARD DISK) none of them work with
it. I'll report on the progress.

Is this a SCSI video card?
No, that is a Video card that has a SCSI port in the back.

As Bill the Cat would say … "Aaaaaaaaack!" I was hoping that they might
be available a trifle sooner than that!
Where, if you don't mind my asking, did you order from and what was the
price?
Also, do you know whether it's SCSI-2 and otherwise backward compatible
with the older 3301 model?

I ordered from CD Rom Inc. (800) 821-5245 in Colorado. I dont remember the
price but I remember that it was very competitive. As for SCSI-2, Yes and
backward compatible with the 3301 it takes the same adapter but a different
driver. note that there is a hardware upgrade for the 3301 to read multi
Photo CD. But to facilitate everyone's choice I'll list the specs for the
3401:

by talking to Toshiba, it looks like its shipping to distributors now and
therefore I might get it earlier (begin Feb). Also they have drivers for
Adaptec and Future Domain and Corel SCSI (aspi driver) hasn't released any
test result for compatibility.
I hope this covers most of your questions.

Actually it has shipped already. I have one installed in my machine now.
I bought it from DC Drives (who advertise in Computer Shopper). It wasn't
listed in their ad; I called about the Texel, but the Toshiba XM-3401B is
supposed to be able to read multi-session photo-cds as is, whereas the
Texel has to be returned for a $20 upgrade, so I got the Toshiba. Here are
some of the features listed in the (photocopied `preliminary') manual: 2x
and 1x rotational speed; 330 kB/s sustained transfer rate; 200ms random
access; photo-cd compliant; multi-media PC spec compliant; SCSI-2 interface
controller.
I'm very pleased with it.

How much is DC Drives asking for it? Do you know why they have a 'B' tagged
onto the end of the 3401, does it mean anything? Do you have DC Drives
number?

DC Drives' price is $529. The 'B' in XM-3401B is just part of Toshiba's
model number for this drive. DC Drives are at 1-800-872-6007.

I note that Sound Electro Flight's ad in the February computer
shopper shows the Toshiba XM-3401 at $469 (bare). They also list the
Texel at $415. These are about the best prices I've seen. However, I note
another message in this forum where someone was able to haggle Dirt Cheap
Drives down to $375, I think.
The Toshiba 3401B is the internal drive,
3401E is the external version, 3401P is the portable version and the 3401A4
is a drive enclosure(???)

We have played with the new Toshiba 3401 for a short period of
time. We used it with our custom SCSI card & software (which is targetted
to the 3301) and had no problems, so it appears to be backward compatible.

More good news. I'm considering it for connection to my UltraStor 14F, for
use under Windows 3.1 and NT.

I got a 3401b as a bare drive. It didn't work for me with the
drivers supplied by Adaptec. (EZ-SCSI 1542b card). I am using
the CorelSCSI drivers.
I like it very much so far. Only negative is the horrible
documentation.

Sorry to but in, but I would like to ask you a question on the 3401b.
The Caddies used by this drive–are they the standard Sony type or does
Toshiba use their own type?

Last I spoke with Corel they had not tested the 3401. Do you mean that it
works anyway ?

They had about 40 in stock today at $499 for the bare drive I believe and
$599 external. I have one and it works great.. but you will need the
updated drivers from Toshiba and they only work on a Future Domain
controller at present.
