Just wanted to post some information that I received from Digital concerning
the purchase price for an Alpha 233 daughtercard for a DEC pcXL. There has
been some talk about this recently now that the possibility of 3ds/NT/Alpha
looms large.
I inquired about upgrading my XL590 to Alpha233 and they quoted me $2995. In
addition, they will give a $500 trade-in allowance for my "old" 590 daughter
card, reducing the net price to $2495. This is a pretty weak allowance
considering the upgrade from a 486 DX4 to 590 is priced at $1949. I think
selling the 590 daughter card seperately should fetch at least $1200, reducing
the net upgrade price from 590 to alpha233 to about $1800. Still not cheap,
but slightly less painful.

The price you got from DEC is pretty much the same deal I was quoted with
respect to the Alpha chip daughtercard upgrade. There are vendors which may be
able to cut you a better deal. There is a company called Neko-Tech (or
something like that) which sells a full range of Alpha products for less than
buying from DEC direct. DEC builds nice equipment but they never make you feel
like you got a great deal.

Hi bob, Thanks for the tip! Would you happen to have their info? I agree with
you about DEC. I think they put together the finest PCs available today and
have excellent field service, but you definitely pay for it. I guess that is
to be expected. I'm never one to waste money on a bargain. Also, is it me or
does DEC's customer service and sales organizations seem like a buch of
bumbling idiots? Just checking… 🙂

I'll see what info I have in the office tomorrow on Neko-Tech. The vendor from
whom I bought my DEC PC was fairly helpful when I had questions but when I had
questions he couldn't answer he put me in touch with a DEC technical guy who
was terrific. I have never given their tech line a call. Good info flows
freely on the several DEC Compuserve forums.
