#3DS & Premire4.0

I was wondering if any one could recommend a video card for capturing and NTSC
output that would get the most out of 3DS AND the Adobe Premire 4.0 video
editing system. I am already running 3DS on a 90Mhz Pentium . Ideally my
partner (who is the video end ) and I want to add the Video card a SCSI adapter
and large capacity hard drives ( two 2Gig drives sounds nice) along with the
Adobe Premire and end up with what would essentially be a hotrodded, non-linear
version of the Amiga Video toaster for a PC. My partner feels that while the
animations are 'cool' they are useless unless we can mix them with live video
footage ourselves. the Premire supports FLC files as well as the various
numbered image file formats, that is why we are leaning towards that . The
Targa 2000 & 3000 EISA cards seem like they would do the job but besides being
a little high in $$ my mother board is PCI/ISA . Any comparable cards that will
do? Also a friend of ours who does multimedia with the Premire on a Mac says he
can output in real time. This would be nice since we plan on working with 3/4"
tape as our output medium and are not tto thrilled with the prospect of single
frame rendering.
Any help would be appreciated !!!
Jeff, I would suggest either the DPS PAR or the PVR (available June 15). The
T2000 is nice, but as you found it is pricey. The PVR (Perception Video
Recorder) will be able to handle full D1 quality input and output, with no
visible compression artifacts. There have been quite a few people who saw this
thing at NAB and were extremely impressed by it. I've got a PAR now (little
brother to the PVR) and have been very happy with it. I can play animation in
real time right out to a Betacam SP deck. Works fantastic, but if you can wait
the PVR will offer much higher quality, for about the same price. The main card
is $1995, capture card is $995 and then you'll need a hard drive or two. It
will use the SCSI AV types. I've heard the 9Gb Micropolis AV is going to be a
winner for the PVR. Also, you will most likely want to dump Premiere and get
In:Sync's Razor Pro. Actually, it's better all around than Premiere, with the
added benefit of being able to work directly with files right off of the
PAR/PVR or the T2000. If you use Premiere you first have to convert to .avi,
edit, then re-save. Pain in the but. There have been a few people around here
trying to use Premiere with the PAR and from what I've read, they'll be getting
RP. Anyway, just some suggestions.

Thanks for the info. It seems like the PAR and the Razor Pro stuff are the "IN"
things around here judging by the amount of people working with them. I've been
teaching myself 3DS for about 5 months and I think it's about time to get stuff
to tape. I've been using the "Inside 3D studio" book by Elliot, Miller & Pyros
(Phenomenol book guys) and I feel confident that I can produce some decent,
useable work, at least on a ground floor level . Perhaps I could upload some
FLICs and you could give me some feedback? Just a thought. Again thanks for the
info , seems it will prove very useful.
You could upload some flics and everyone could let you know what they think.
I'll be sure to take a look. I usually check for new files about every 10 days
or so, unless something really cool got put up. You'll like the PAR, but if you
can wait, (and have the money) get the PVR.

PMJI, is June 15 really the release date for the PVR? Should I put my order in
now?

As far as _I_ know it's the 15th. That's what DPS has stated. I'd give them a
call though if you want to be 100% sure.

Well, what you are asking for will really have to wait 'till summer. Both
Truevision and DPS will be shipping PCI verions of thier boards. Since your
current system has a PCI/ISA, then the PAR would be a descent choice now. It
remains to be seen, how the DPS and the Truevision products compare in
performance, price and functionality. The interesting thing to keep in mind is
that Avid's PC product will be on the Targa2k, so being able to upgrade you
system to a PC-Avid might be nice.
Unfortunately, we are all in a wait and see 'till summer.

Now I didn't know that! I've been working with the T2k almost a year now but
would consider changing for the new DPS PCI board. Though the quality of output
from the T2k is great, the software and drivers leave a lot to be desired.
Endorsement by Avid would do a lot to to bring the T2k into a mainstream
product.

Under Win95, you can look forward to probably a 50% thruput increase (close to
3 MB/s). With the dynamic q-factoring … that'll put out a sweet picture.

Sounds great! I have Win 95 up and running (but can't get 3DS going for the
moment – Phar Lap err 74: Can't use -REALBREAK under this version of DPMI).
Unfortunately Truevision say they won't release any Win95 drivers until the
final version ships. By this time of course the hardware will be a bit dated.

If you are interested in the Avid MSP running on the T2K-PCI, then you should
be prepared to buy the bundle from your local Avid dealer. I doubt that the
software will be available separately to run on the generic T2K. Avid uses its
own compression technology and typically modifies the boards it gets from
Truevision. It should however be a great product!

From what I heard at NAB, the de-bundling and the extent of customization
wasn't firm and they were still concidering selling the software alone. The
marketplace may force the issue. D-Vision for one is going to have some level
of hardware independence and other's are comming out with AVID comparable
products that will run on Targa2k and other boards.
It will be interesting to see what happens. Personnaly, I hope they break it
up and support more than just the Targa2k.
