#ANI TGA problems
9 messages in this thread
I just recieved my copy of Animator Studio. Unfortunately, I am having real
trouble with it. It has taken more than an hour a this point attempting to load
a sequence of tga files created with 3D Studio, an has not completed it yet.
What gives? the machine I'm using is a Pentium 90 w/ 64 meg of ram. It appears
to be "converting" each individual tga file. Is his because they were created
in 3DS wih he conversion turned on? This is definately no good. -Scott
Scott,
Resolution of those .TGA files plays a big part in how fast Animator Studio
loads them as well as the number of files. Animator will load all of the files
so that you can work with them as an animation. If Animator Studio takes too
long to load the .TGA files, here's what you can do to save time:
1. Reduce the resolution of the .TGA files.
2. Work with smaller segments of the .TGA files at a time.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Jeremy. the resoluion of the files is 512 x 486. They are part of an
animation intended for video tape. This resolion does not seem very high. I did
rerender some of these files in a "non-compressed" state from 3DS r4. They seem
to load alot faster (a few minutes). Shouldn't a little more attention been
paid to make it work better wih 3DS? This is a large segment of your potential
market. -Scott
Video output is a interesting issue since it usually contains fairly high
resolution files for Windows(not for DOS). However, resolution is not so much
the issue as the number of files you are loading at that resolution. Each file
takes more of your physical RAM and then into virtual memory. This is the only
way that Animator Studio can work with sequential images as an animation. As an
experiment, try rendering out those frames to 320×240 .TGA files (compressed or
uncompressed)and loading them into Animator Studo. I bet you'll notice a
significant increase in performance!

Thanks Jeremy, I'll give i a try. -Scott
The resolution of those file is pretty small, it seems that the program will be
quite slow at doing tasks like this, geez, not looking forward to that.
ahh.
Mark. At what you were saying, I would of thought those file were 1024×768,
that would have been more like it.
Mark, those files are set up for video work. With all the hoop-la about video
in windows, I would have thought that a 640×480 size would have been set up as
the standard, instead of 300×200. Maybe the fact that 3DStudio r5 will be NT
only will allow the use of AVI files. I am still somewhat disappointed in
Animator Studio though. -Scott
Hi Scott,
geez, 320×200, actually they should ban this resolution! god, 4 or 5 years ago
the original Animator was running at this resolution. Good work should not even
be wasted at this resolution. (gasp) I'm a fan of those computer games like
Doom, Dark Forces, etc, the only thing that still sucks is that they run at
320×200 and the graphics still suck for 1995, eventhough making those games at
640×480 would need new and faster computers to run it. Oh well, I guess we will
see with Ani Studio!, I'm sure though, by the next version it will be
completely redone to get the best speed out of it as possible. (Build and
learn), all in all Adesk puts out some amazing good stuff.
Mark In Montreal.
Yea Mark, I agree, all in all Adesk's stuff is excellent. -Scott
