I have just seen a few of the threads regarding the move to NT and all the commotion it seems to be stirring. FWIW I thought I would drop in my two cents.. (why, I have no idea… ) We develop on NT using MSV C++ (CDK apps) . Although the change from Metaware and Watcom that we were using before was a bit to overcome for a few days, it really wasn't too bad. The ports of the code were really a breeze and the advantages of NT and the new compiler have more than made up for any effort needed. Although the hardware configs are still pretty tough, coming from the wayback machine of mainframes long ago, it was actually kind of refreshing to get back to a real operating system with security and monitoring capabilities again. IMHO, I wish everyone would just move to NT instead of Windows 95, and MicroSoft would concentrate on getting NT right instead of messing around with all this interim garbage. I have not kept up with all the info on this new move to NT for 3D Studio but I am of course assuming that it will use Visual C++ and those of you that have not used it before will be wonder soon how you ever got along with out it. The debugger alone is magic in terms of the time you save. I am not a full time coder myself, but I never had a debugger before that popped you directly to the line of your source code that caused the problem for you. You don't even have to go look for it. Maybe others do that too and I am just unaware… but for us it has been GREAT and I'll bet that you are all really glad that Yost and company made this decision next year at this time…. Thank you Angela! I'm glad you were able to give us some perspective from the developers point of view, I'm sure NT is the Way to Go, I guess I'll have to stop talking about it and actually get a copy for our dealership to get up to speed on. What do you recommend? Would there be any advantage of NT Server VS the current 3.5X Client version for a dealership to noodle around with at this time? Someone told me that the NT Server version now shipping is actually an older version that the 3.51 Client version that allows to compress selectivly. Could you shed any light on this? Murph'

Hi Murph, <<<Someone told me that the NT Server version now shipping is actually an older version that the 3.51 Client version that allows to compress selectivly. >>> I am not sure about the newest releases of NT but I will ask Millard who keeps up with all this. He will know…. We are still running 3.5 I think and haven't upgraded to 3.51. At least that is my understanding, but I will check. Not much help am I? Anybody else out there got an answer? So Murph, doin' any low poly modeling yet? Angela

Hi Angela, I don't know much about the programming side, but everything you say jives with developers I've spoken with. They all seem to love it as well. I'm very excited about the prospects because I've only done a little C programming but I think this environment will help further my skills in this area and that would be great. Maybe I'll write my own display drivers. <g> Regards, John

Hi John, << I'm very excited about the prospects because I've only done a little C programming but I think this environment will help further my skills in this area and that would be great.>>> Just remember the rest of us who struggled with compilers that ended up with version numbers like 3.2.5.01.c.xyz ……not fun…. I am hoping that we won't have to switch compilers any more… maybe…. But I've said that about operating systems for the past ten years too…everything always changes… I hope you enjoy learning to code in NT. I sure have…what little time I get to do it. Someday I will get there full time…. I just know it. Angela

Hi Angela, I appreciate you're taking the time to make the post. NT is really great, the more I use it the more I like it. 🙂 John
