Well, Andy… Are you ready to make some travel plans for this fall??!! When I dialed the number and Paul Linnman answered it yesterday, I asked if he would know what I was talking about if I asked about blowing up the whale 25 years ago. He chuckled and assured me he would, that many people are still making calls to him even now on that subject. He wasn't sure if the Oregon Department of Transportation (Salem, OR, address listed at the end of that first posting) would have tape copies, but did say he thought the person in charge back then is now dead (the material I obtained indicated he was merely retired). Paul suggested that tape copy inquiries should go to Doug Brazil, the photographer who actually took the pictures and still works at the station and (perhaps?) owns the rights. The guy wasn't at his desk at the moment, so he couldn't transfer me to him. I asked if Mr. Brazil would mind getting written inquiries instead of my just chatting with him, and Paul thought that would be fine, since lots and lots of people are still asking about it. KATU, Channel 2, is the Portland, Oregon, ABC affiliate. If you'd care to write, the address would be: Doug Brazil KATU Television Center P.O. Box 2 Portland, OR 97207 Now, here's where the travel plans come in… Mr. Linnman mentioned that because the whale story is of such a continuing interest, the station is planning to present a Special Documentation on the Whale Story on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the event this coming fall (date of showing unknown yet, but the event seems to have taken place on Nov. 12, 1970). I asked if KATU may then make copies of THAT tape available for purchase, seeing as how the story is continuing to be so popular. Paul said he's pass that suggestion along to station management. And, of course, the way to SEE IT YOURSELF is to plan a vacation to Portland for this fall, using November 12 as the target date, and be sure to bring along your VCR! (Sorry, you'll have to hurry to catch the specials on the — what, 15th anniversary now? — May 18th Mt. St. Helen's Eruption!) Cheers! — Tom
