The Meier Utilities for 3D Studio Release 4 =========================================== This is an update to the Lighting Utilities with many new features. ————————————————————– – Real time name popups for lights and cameras (similar to icon Tool Tips under Windows). As you move the cursor about the screen the names of any lights or cameras you get close to automatically pop up beneath the cursor. – Graphic Selection of lights for use with all commands including Update, Array and Delete. – Ability to save and recall groups of lights, cameras and meshes using a 24 character name. Up to 64 sets per 3DS or PRJ file. Named groups of items may be used with any command. – A new command to add a group of objects to the exclusion list of a group of lights. – A new command to very quickly toggle lights on/off. – A new command to quickly toggle cone visibility for spot lights and cameras. New selection tools for manipulating multiple mesh objects, lights and cameras. ———————————————————– – Select items based on common criteria including any combination of color/on-off state/hidden state/frozen state/selected state. – Much more powerful wildcard pattern matching including these options: #=any numeric digit, @=any alpha char,~=not the pattern, []=any character enclosed in the brackets,[-]=ranges of characters, [~-]=any char not in the range… Programmable User Interface ————————— – No main dialog – all commands are executed via user programmable keys or strokes. Strokes allow one to execute commands by sketching shapes with the mouse. For example a few strokes which are defined by default are: Point to a light (its name will pop up), press the right button and drag straight down – this causes the light to be toggled on or off. Or point to a light and draw an "L" shape – you may then change the lights color. Or point to an object and stroke a "V" shape. The object will be loaded into the real time renderer. The idea is you don't have to navigate a menu – you just point to the object and "flip your wrist". This simultaneously specifies the object to act upon and the command to apply. To program a stroke you simply hold the Ctrl key and draw the stroke to teach. You then choose the command to assign from a list. This free program is in the IPAS Usage Library in a 166K file named MEIER.ZIP Mark PS Thanks to Jonas for lots of help during development. Also thanks to David Rhoten for beta testing and many good ideas – including the name pop ups.

Alan, I hope you enjoy it. I remember our email conversation about picking lights graphically after I first posted LIGHT. Well, it took me 13 months but I finally got to it <g>. There are some great calls in IPAS4 that let me do a bunch of the new stuff… See ya, Mark

Mark, What a wonderful thing you've given us! For Free! (Its almost UnAmerican!) Of course, I did pay $30 for the original light.pxp. Can't help but wonder what you could make for us if you got _paid_ !!! Thanks, Thanks, Thanks, Alec Jason P.S. Are you really from this planet?
#170239From: MARK A. MEIERMay 16, 1995 6:35 AM
Alec, >>Of course, I did pay $30 for the original light.pxp.<< No, you paid $35 for the original 🙂 You were the first one (of 5 – RobertR, DavidR, MikeS, DougV were the others) to register your copy, so thank you. I'll keep sending you via email anything new I create – like NT versions. >>UnAmerican<< <g>. There is really an amazing amount of free stuff on CIS. I lurk over in the Hewlett Packard Handheld Computer forum and there is some great software – amazing really. C, Forth, AWK, Chess programs, all kinds of good stuff. Mark

Martin, You're welcome. I hope you like the new version. Mark BTW I thought your Mountain Water bottle was the best effect in the SE book. Very cool.

Mark, >> BTW I thought your Mountain Water bottle was the best effect in the SE book. Very cool. << er, gosh. Free software and a nice compliment like that …. I proclaim you "super-software-hero of the month" 🙂

Hi Mark, Excellent, excellent work on the Meier utilties. The "stroke" interface addition is like a godsend since I use a tablet in 3DS. What an incredible tool! Judging by the download count I'm not the only one. <g> Thanks, -Heinz.
#170610From: MARK A. MEIERMay 17, 1995 7:05 PM
Heinz, I'm glad you like the stroke stuff. I wrote the code to do that quite a while ago (in 87 for a paint program when I was an architecture student) and some of the new calls available in IPAS4 have let me make it useful in 3DS. >>tablet<< Hmmm… I wonder how it would work if strokes responded to pressure as well as shape? Something for me to think about… Mark

Geez… I just noticed the stroke stuff… Pure magic! There are some folks at Autodesk who NEED to see this. – G
#170226From: alec jasonMay 16, 1995 1:31 AM
Hey Gary, Does Autodesk know about Mark Meier? How come you guys haven't hired him? Seems like it might be a good idea to grab this guy before he creates and gives away more _free_ stuff — which is superior to much of what is being sold for big bucks! Better hurry because I'm going to see if I can legally adopt him. Alec Jason
#170270From: David RhotenMay 16, 1995 10:14 AM
I would second that, Alec. Autodesk/YG _ought_ to grab Mark, AND you should adopt him! (Mark Meier Jason… Has kind of a nice ring, don't you think?) <G> Dave

Alec, >> see if I can legally adopt him<< Geezzz Alec .. I don't know … Mark Jason just doesn't have the same "ring" and Mark Meier. Maybe one of those new-fangled combo names might work .. Let's see .. Mark Meier Jason … naaaa … Mark Jason-Meier .. now that's not bad. Ang, President, Dynamic Technologies, Inc. An Autodesk Systems Center for Multimedia in MD

<< Geez, Alec . . . I don't know . . . Mark Jason just doesn't have the same "ring" as Mark Meier >> Okay, okay, okay. I'm willing to compromise. What if I change my name and my wife's and my daughter's to Meier! We'll just be one big(ger) happy family. And a soon to be rich family, as soon as I can get my little Mark working under _my_ tender management! ("Have you finished you IPAS chores, Marky? Oh, good boy! Here's a fig newton for you.") Congrats on getting it out! :-)..
#170608From: MARK A. MEIERMay 17, 1995 7:05 PM
Jonas, I almost didn't get it out. I've had it in the state it is now for _months_. I've been so busy for the last few months I haven't had any time to work on it. And I knew that I wasn't going to find any time soon either. So basically I just commented out a whole bunch of newer stuff that wasn't quite ready yet and let it go. I figured better to just get it out. Thanks again for all your help, Mark

Totally smobgacked. Even as we speak I am paying homage to your craven image and killing the fatted calf (well, vegeburger actually). Thanks Mark, you restore my faith in human nature by allowing novices like me to get stuff like this. For God's sake don't go and work for Autodesk, PLEASE! Reynolds. England.

Hi Scott, England huh? Dig that <g>. Glad you like the program. Actually I've come across a few bugs and have considered renaming them the Smith Utilities… Oh well – one of these weeks I'll find the time to fix 'em. See ya, Mark

Mark; WOW! That is a really GREAT IPAS. I want to compliment you on how you documented how to use it, and for providing the .PRJ file to get started on. This is one time I believe "Online Documentation" works. I was able to shell out to a text editor, read step 1, go back in and learn how it works. Then on to step two, etc. It is great. I am glad you included the ascii file of how to use it. For future versions, would it be possible to program a key to shell out of 3DS and your IPAS directly to a user definable text editor? I personally use "BRIEF". It won't be necessary after you learn the program, but it sure helps in the beginning. I only have time to go through 3 steps so far, but I am really impressed!
#170639From: MARK A. MEIERMay 17, 1995 10:29 PM
Hi Dennis, Thanks for the feedback. As far as shelling out to DOS and firing up a user defined editor – I'm not really sure… An IPAS routine can quite easily be programmed to drive 3DS's internal editor though. One can create new icons in the toolbar which invoke various options when pressed (like jumping back into the 3D Editor…). I agree that would be an interesting and good way to learn a program. Mark

Mark; >> As far as shelling out to DOS and firing up a user defined editor Thanks for your reply, and for your IPAS. I appologize for not responding sooner, but I have not had time presently to look further at it or anything due to overload of other work. It seems I am doing two jobs now. One is my day job, and the other my night animation job. All for the same company presently, and I am on overload, but learning a lot. This is my first logon to CIS since my message to you mid May. >> An IPAS routine can quite easily be programmed to drive 3DS's internal >> editor though. If you could easily do this, I believe it would be helpful. Obviously, you too are busy, and until you can get some $$$ for this it would be a low priority. Thanks again for your generosity.
