#HP4M Ethernet'd?

A few months ago, I remember someone here (Kelly Jordan?) discussing an
Ethernet card for their HP 4M laser printer, and how they got it connected to
their Amiga and other computers.
I'm thinking about getting one of these cards, so I'm hunting for anecdotes and
suggestions…

We were discussing ideas about HOW to connect a LJ4 printer with an ethernet
interface to an Amiga via ethernet. So far I haven't found a solution, so
haven't bought an ethernet card for the Amiga.
Picked up an HP ScanJet IIIC at the Dayton Hamvention. What a scanner!! Have
it hooked up to the Pentium machine.

I paid US$920 for the IIIC scanner. Instead of using the supplied SCSI
interface card, am using a SoundBlaster 16/SCSI-II card. Saves having to load
another driver (CAM driver for the HP card).
And as far as I can tell (I did a lot of looking at what the computer vendors
had), the outfit I bought the scanner from is the only one that had the IIIC
scanners there, and he only had two. The second one didn't last long!

I bought the JetDirect card. So far, so good. If you can find a Unix-style
'lpr' printer program for the Amiga, the JetDirect card implements that
protocol. For that matter, you can even 'telnet' to it to reconfigure it. In
other words, it speaks TCP/IP and acts like its own computer. I've got it
connected via Mac EtherTalk as well as the WinNT driver, and the package
includes a disk for Windows for Workgroups and OS/2 installations, but I
haven't tried them.
Perhaps someone has done an Amiga printer device to lpr printer driver…
Ah, that's right, you're a ham. Do you know anything about 900 Mhz
spread-spectrum propagation characteristics?

From watching over in the HPperiph forum, the Windwos for Workgroups software
sometimes does not work all that great. Lots of people seem to have troubles.
There is also updated software available for the card over there.
Let me know if you ever find a way to connect the printer device to an lpr
daemon. Then I will look at getting a board for the Amiga, and borrow the card
for the printer from work to give it a spin.
Have the two clones (386bb and p90) working fine using Personal Netware, with
the printer hanging off the parallel port of the P90 machine. It acts as the
server for the printer. HP doesn't have any software to allow Personal NetWare
to work with their printer ethernet interface.
Don't have any real knowledge of 900MHz propogation. Just the usual, avoid
going through masonry (cement), steel, or heavy foilage. Also, if there are
lots of flat metal or cement surfaces, you may have multipath problems. Are
you looking at putting in a S.S. radio modem for your ethernet highway, or a
900 MHz cordless phone?
Am going to get a little experience with 900 MHz wide band transmission. Picked
up a 910MHz 1 watt video transmitter and also a downconverter. Am going to
stick the transmitter and a B/W video camera on a remote control vehicle.
