I looked up Loup City on the map, and find it hard to believe that a city that
size could go up to O street (maybe they start at N?).
They got my copy out to me right away. There are some bugs that should be
fixed, and I hate to do this to any program, but recommend you wait till ver
5.1, which should be out soon. This is a complete replacement for Workbench,
so be ready for some major changes as to what you are used to in Opus. It is
really multitasking. If you start a program from a file list, you can still
use Opus, and don't get that annoying wait symbol.

He has shown a lot of interest in supporting an Amiga product in Amiga's time
of trouble.

What do you mean a complete replacement for WB? It still does file management
and such, right? Does it have the same old left-right window arrangement, or
does it have a window-for-every-drawer format?

Paul,
PMFJI DirOpus does indeed file-management, but as an option you can replace
your workbench with Dopus. You then get a screen with icons representing the
various HD's etc., and you can launch any program from within dopus.
You can obtain as many listers as you want in Dopus5, and the great thing is
multitasking. When copying from one drive to another, you can open another
lister for those drives, and still perform other functions. True
multitasking.<g>
There is a preference file included for those that prefer the old setup,
there's even one that emulates DiskMasterII.

with it is a simulation of the old Opus 4 screen. However, it is kind of ugly.
When you open a device or directory, you get a window that can be either
Workbench type icons, or a file list similar to the old Opus 4 listings (or
looks similar to that other operating systems File Manager). However, you can
have as many windows open as you like, and each window operates independantly
of all the others. For example, if you were to start a long copy (say all of a
floppy to a hard disk directory), this would tie up Opus 4 until the copy was
done. With Opus 5, you can open another device, button window, etc. and use
them while the copy proceeds. This alone makes it worth the upgrade.

Do you know if owners (bought my upgrade from Micro) will be notified when
the upgrade is completed? I still haven't installed mine (got a bit leery
after all the negativity I've seen posted about) but I do intend to.
When you say it's a complete replacement for WB, does that mean for things
like WBstartup too?

As far as being afraid to install it, with the exception of the one major bug,
it works fine. The major bug, for those of you who tuned in late, is that
sometimes function commands don't work if you pass the name of the selected
file to one of the functions. Sometimes they do. Except for the selected file
name I have not been able to identify any other pattern. A second bug is that
the colors are not correct on the pallette when the program starts. I have
been informed that this may only be a problem in AmigaDOS 2.1. Install it, and
see if you can live with the problems. I can. If not, don't use it until you
can get a fix.

Just got Opus 5.0 (not an upgrade, first-time user, though I've worked with
Opus 4.0 a bit on other machines). I'm running it under WB 3.1 on an ECS, '030
Amiga and am impressed with the concept and much of what it does. However:
1. You're right. There's some kind of bug with the function commands, though I
haven't diagnosed a pattern. I can read texts, I can play sounds, I can
de-lharc files. It is only intermittently (seldom at that) successful showing
IFFs or JPEGs or GIFs, even though I (apparently) have set up the Filetypes
properly and also have system Datatypes for each. I can see such pictures
using, say, Viewtek. This may partly be a bug in my system or an ECS/3.1
problem, since system datatypes for JPEGs and GIFs seldom work, either.
2. I can get Opus 5.0 to lock up, requiring a soft reboot, by trying to
internally multitask — e.g., trying to reposition a disk icon while a file
list is busy opening. This has happened several times in my first day of use.
