DPaint5 DOES look real nice but 24-bit is a pain. I converted a damaged GIF
to 24-bit via ADPro and loaded it into DPaint5 for repair. I cut a brush in
24-bit but to line it up properly for pasting was hell! Like you, I'm not
using an AGA Amiga.
There are a lot of nice features in DPaint5 but I wish Electronic Arts
included high color board drivers. On a minor point I HATE constantly seeing
the word "COLOR" spelled "COLOUR." My eye is constantly drawn to it and it
drives me crazy.
Haha, as far as I can see, COLOR is American and COLOUR English …

I'm just the opposite, as a Canadian I get pretty annoyed seeing COLOR in all
print form nowadays.

When making a program for the US market they should conform to that
spelling. I wouldn't think of writing a program for an English consumer and
use the Americanized spelling of "color."
It seems to me that, now that almost everything is designed for people
worldwide (including CompuServe) that we will probably have to be a bit more
flexible about such spellings – won't we?

I suppose you are right, Betty. I'm sure I'll get used to it. I'm more
concerned about DPaint's non-retargetability than its spelling.

I always spell "color" and "humor" as "colour" and "humour"… almost always..
I learned it from some point in my early programming days, when I (or my
program, I forget which) confused "color" as "col or", and later "humor" as
"hum or" (back then, I only used 3 character variables).
Geez.. that must have been 12 years ago.
and I'll never spell supper as "d-i-n-n-e-r" 🙂
You may spell them in any way you wish, Eet. Just so they work.
You may know, I write for he ICPUG journals in England – and they always put my
articles through their English spell checkers and change everything before they
print them. I have to look twice sometimes to see whether it is really what I
wrote or not!

Having everything done the same way is worse than a straight jacket. The little
differences are really good, adds richness to humanity.
Look at how cars are soooo similar now, due I think to the big businees world
car concepts. Personally, that is really boring/irritating as there is nothing
much in the way of cars now that are standouts/different etc..

What about optimise and optimize? And all those verbs that finish with -ise or
-ize? What about centered and centred? What about airplane and aeroplane? What
about programme and program? And so many more.
You shouldn't HATE that. That HATE sounds a little fascist. But I hope you are
not. You just seem a little bit uninformed. And that is easy to fix.

Thanks, but I don't need fixing. I don't hate a person or group. I hate
the way DPaint5 spells color. It looks like a glaring spelling error and my
eye is constantly drawn to it. I realize the spellings you mentioned are
correct in England and some other english speaking countries but this software
was sold in the USA and should conform to American spellings. As I stated in
another post, if I were writing software for the British market (or a British
version of an American program) I would use British spellings.
This is really a minor point compared to what I was saying in my origional
post, which was that I wish DPaint5 had drivers for various 3rd party high
color boards (Picasso, IV24, EGS, etc.)

When I load DPaint V, I get the options to use my Picasso screens. The
program loads and LOOKS right. The problems beging when I try to do things. In
24 bit mode, it won't load ANYTHING (even things created in DPaint IV)
correctly nor will it save anything correctly. In 128 color mode it will load
and save correctly, but certain other functions don't work right. Even in 16
color mode (still on an Picasso screen) it doesn't work right (can't paste down
a brush that one has cut).
I haven't spent much time in ECS modes yet, but I really don't see the point
of using this program instead of either DPaint IV (for lower bit plane pics) or
Opalpaint. I am VERY disappointed!

If you get a chance to try out Photogenics you might be pleasantly
surprised. I had a few problems with it but they turned out to be caused by
ClockDJ (a title bar utility) so I've found a way around it. From the little
I've tried, it really looks like a good one. There's a demo wandering around
you might want to try to find.

I really hadn't noticed the "colour" thing. Just checked it out and by golly
you're right. Kind of strange since DPIV has the "color" spelling. Oddly
enough, I had to train myself to spell the word "color" without the u. I guess
when I was growing up I learned how to spell from the British authors and
American authors like Poe who used the British spelling.

I double checked DPaint4 to make sure of the spelling of "color" too. To
me, that means there was a conscious effort to "correct" the spelling in
DPaint5.
Anywho, this isn't as important as the other point I was making which was
that I wish DPaint5 would re-target to high color boards. If they provided
this feature they could spell color "kolour" for all I care <g>.

I noticed the whole package is "European" (or is that Europaen) in design, I
guess they know where the larger Amiga market is and acted accordingly. Would
you like to pay extra for printing and programming two seperate versions???
I'll just be glad to have ANY new Amiga software.
Just tell people you are using the more expensive "Imported Version" 😉
Seems to me that since "English" came from England, however they spell it must
be correct.
