I am very pleased to see your posting on the Flyer in use under the stress of
meeting commercial time lines. I must admit that your experiences with the
Flyer mirror mine completely. I am, however, editing my Hi-8 footage shot with
a 3-chip Sony VX3 in the HQ5 mode because on my six foot Sony projector I can
see a very real difference in the quality of HQ5 and SP. The few times I have
mixed SP and HQ5 clips, I have experienced no problems in playback. In fact,
the problems I am seeing with the Flyer are an occasional report of dropped
frames (always solved by digitizing a second time) and an occasional crash
caused by selecting an effect (the twist wipe) that appears to have a bug in
it. Otherwise, I find my Flyer to be stable and giving very fine results using
a few workarounds.
Have you received the production version of Flite Gear from Harold Russel yet?
I think Harold was to send those out this week, but I have not talked to him
for a few days. I am still waiting for mine.

I just returned today (Thursday) from London where I have been since leaving
Raleigh last Saturday evening. I have not yet received the full release
version of Flite Gear. However, I find the 0.9 version to be quite stable and
very very useful. Also at last I received today the 4.03 CD and manual for the
Toaster Flyer.

Here is another sucess story. We here at Nightscape have put two elites
together using an RAID for JAS Engineering. We now have have one 18 gig double
quick elite drive. D-2 here we come. It records and plays greeeat. Plus it
takes only one scssi location. I pray I have just saved my investment. We are
now recording stuff to fill it and see what happens.

Yes, Gary , that is true but at least one is adding to ones system not losing
capacity and speed.

That's great news regarding your successful use of two 9 GB Seagate Elite
drives in a RAID. I have posted another report of some bugs and workarounds
that I have discovered this weekend which you may find useful. Although the
Flyer is not bug free, I am finding that I can do just about anything I want to
with it if I just persist long enough. And I could never ever return to linear
editing after using the Flyer. This is great fun and I continue to knock on
wood as to how well my system with two 9 GB Seagates is performing. Soomeone
yesterday mentioned that they thought it was very important to have adequate
cooling for the drive units. I agree. My two Seagate 9 Gb drives are housed
in a 7 bay tower with 250 watt power supply and three large cooling fans. I
wonder if this explains why I almost never see stutter, flashing, or other
signs of thermal calibration problems, even after hours of using the Flyer?

I don't Know if does or not but I can tell you we switch our system from a
toaster oven to a 7 bay 300 watt system with two cooling fans and saw a
decrease in stuttering problems. This is before yesterday sucess with the raid
and now we shall see what we shall see.
