I noticed you giving advice to someone on TIFF conversions for use on the
Mac, and I have a weird problem related to this. For some reason, the TIFF and
PICT graphics I convert using AdPro and port over to the Mac will not show up
as viewable graphics. I'm specifically having this difficulty with the Texture
Gallery CDRom set put out by Fish. The files on the CD in the TIFF and PICT
directory (I mean "folder") are there, but none of the Mac programs used to
view graphics will load them. They don't even show up in the file requester.
On the Mac Desktop (its Workbench), the icons for the files do show up, but the
"Get Info" menu selection for them indicate that the Mac is seeing them as a
text files. Whereas on the Amiga side, the files read as a PICT or TIFF and
are viewable through AdPro. I was successful in taking a GIF file I pulled off
of Compuserve and viewing it on the Mac, and it also converted via AdPro into a
viewable PICT and TIFF on the Mac. So, any thoughts here?

I had a similar problem with Picts I'd created using ADPro's Pict saver and
then sent to a service bureau to be made into slides. The bureau couldn't open
them into either Photoshop or Powerpoint, though both these programs accept
Pict files. I did some research and discovered that the Pict algorithm is in
its second generation and the original is not compatible with some programs.
It's possible that ADPro uses this outdated Pict saver in its program.
As far as the Tiffs are concerned, are you saving them as compressed Tiffs. If
you are, the viewer you are using my not know how to decompress them. Other
than that I can think of no reason why your Mac shouldn't be able to view them.
Tiff is a native Mac graphic format.
You don't mention in your message how you are getting the images from the Amiga
to the Mac. Are you using an Emplant, or are you using Maxdos?
Or, (and if you are I want to know how you made it work), are you using a null
modem cable and a netware program to network the two computers together?
You also don't mention what CD rom reader you are using, or are you working on
a PowerMac with built in CD rom capabilities?
"Get info" is probobly reading the icon files which are text files. Perhaps the
HD partition you are trying to load the images onto is actually full. Did you
recently drag files from it into the trash, but forget to empty the trash? I
know it's is a silly question, but this caught me once. I didn't know at the
time that the files are still there, just the icons have been removed, and they
stay there until you empty the trash.
If the partition is too full to accept the images, the mac (in it's infinite
wisdom) will simply fill whatever remaining space is left with the icons from
the files you are trying to transfer. It'll look like the files are there, but
only the icons made the trip!

FWIW, I religously use JPEG's to go to MAC, with about 95% quality. You just
have to remember to use .jpg rather than .jpeg as an extension, or Photoshop
goes "Huh?"
