D-Vision Systems, Inc. (Formerly TouchVision Systems, Inc.) Announced
2 new products at NAB: D-Vision OnLINE (TM), non-linear editing
software for the broadcast and video professional, D-Vision FilmCUT
(TM) digital non-linear editing for the film makers and D-Vision
PostSUITE (TM) integrated workstations with either software bundled
in for those who want a factory integrated solution.
All products produce 60 field, broadcast quality resolution, maximize
the 32 bit multi-tasking capabilities of NT and utilize
non-proprietary hardware for easy upgradability and low risk of
obsolescence.
Also, announced at NAB: OpenDML a coalition formed by many PC and Mac
(mostly PC) hardware and software vendors to increase the quality of
video for windows at the system and board level for integration of
software and hardware. By having OpenDML, it would be possible to
have your choice of video and audio compression boards and also
interoperate when creating digital media with many different software
tools such as the new D-Vision Products, Alladdin, Photoshop, Montage
and others.
Companies involved with the coalition include but are not limited to:
Pinnacle, Intergraph, Microsoft, D-Vision, Matrox, Truevision, EMC2, Montage,
and more.
Did anyone attend the meeting? Any thoughts?
I was at the Open DML press conference. The group lead by D/Vision
and Matrox presented a white paper about what Open DML was going to
achieve. It is designed to extend Windows 95 & NT to be more
friendly to video. They are working on file structures, and data
types first. Then, they will progress to device drivers, etc.
This is a long term effort that will bring new less expensive solutions to high
quality video under Windows NT & 95. Microsoft was represented at the meeting.
While they did not endorse the Open DML group, they plan to support it. My
understanding is that about 25 manufacturers have come on board with Open DML.
Avid was at the meeting and were very interested in learning more about it.
It will be some time (less than a year?) before lots of Open DML compliant
hardware and software will start showing up.
