My name is Gary Meyer; I am marketing director for TAO Media Systems.
If I may add a suggestion: TAO Media Systems has Editizer software for
controlling VISCA in AB roll setup–this software also lets you control the
Videonics MX-1 from the editing controller. You can store the MX-1 transition
settings individually for each edit event–up to 16,000 events. The package
costs $695 list and includes what you need to plug into your computer–Windows
or Macintosh (Mac version is just being finished).
EVO-9720 is supported with TAO's Editizer-9720 software and allows cuts editing
directly from your PC or Mac. Editizer-9720 also provides the above-described
switcher control for several different switchers. Editizer-9720 solves the one
minute limitation on insert edits by automatically appending extensions to your
EDL: If your event is 1 min, 20 secs, Editizer splits it into one event of one
minute and another event of twenty seconds. The insert edit limitation is
treated in a similar manner by automatically setting up and performing a second
pass resulting in video and audio inserts being possible. This one is $695
also.

I called for information a couple weeds ago but wasn't sufficiently informed
on VISCA to benefit from the conversation. I understand what you have to
offer and it is certainly an answer for integrating the MX-1 into a linear
editing suite with the right decks.
Frankly I'm attempting to sidestep the deck issue by going NLE as soon as
the new generation of PCI hi band capture cards come out this Spring. I can
put up a nice P90 workstation for less than the cost of the admittedly fine
Sony Hi8 decks. And then I'll have the infinite flexibility (and headaches
of course) of Adobe Premiere.

What types of productions are you likely to be doing as you start using your
system, whatever it turns out to be? I'm always interested in what people are
planning to do with non-linear.

TAO Media Systems
My needs are modest but my desire is great. Just home video of the wife,
dogs, cats and parrot. Underwater video. Travel. Fun stuff.
I'm actually starting out now with a GVP G-Lock VGA+ genlock/encoder/video
card and Curtain Call, PrimeTime plus Video Director. I'm now thinking that
IF the G-Lock can really handle digitial video that I might consider an iSVR
Pro too. That way I can milk some more life out of this 486 ISA machine
while the PCI hardware and capture cards get it together. Then according to
what I've done with the GVP add a PCI DTV system. I can use my TR-700 for
source and S-VHS IR control VCR for record now w/o buying additional decks.
With the PCI system I wouldn't need decks either since I could just use the
TR-700 for both source and record. I'd like a EV-S7000 but it's a bit
pricey. That way I could use the TR-700 in the less demanding record role
and then put the master back in the 7000 for PCM audio dub. This would be
nice I think.

THanks John, that helps me to keep up with what folks are doing at various
levels. I have to admit I deal mostly with pro-level stuff which is much
easier to solve integration issues with as you can imagine, so I find your
situation instructive.

In my case the integration issue is compounded with beginner's ignorance and
my long established pattern of seeking hi end solutions at flea market
prices. <g> With my current equipment and linear editing (GVP Personal
Suite Plus) I think I'm there. The question remains how and when to add NLE
capability. I now think the when is later this summer as the new crop of
about to be introduced PCI full screen capture cards get sorted out.
From what little I know about VISCA I keep looking for ways to add this
capability. I was suprised to just learn that Video Director 1.5 bundled
with PSP has VISCA capability. It's got me going hummmmm. I often see the
Sony whatever-1000 advertised used on CIS and a single Vbox to the TR-700
would have me going here. I believe the 1000 would give me PCM audio insert
capability with the master tape. That would be a good thing.
