Well, magazines like VIDEOMAKER, VIDEO PRO, VIDEOGRAPHY and DIGITAL VIDEO are
good sources for that sort of information.
However, to cover the terms you've already asked about:
Genlock–is a box/card that enables your computer's RGB monitor output to be
successfully recorded to NTSC/PAL/SECAM videotape. It's used for titling,
output of computer animation, and output of nonlinear edited footage to
videotape.
Control L–or LANC, is Sony's linear editing protocol. It send a signal from
the edit controller to the VCRs you're using to edit to tell them when to start
playing/recording and when to stop.
Control M–or Panasonic 5-pin, is Panasonic's linear editing control. It's not
compatible w/LANC, but it does the same thing. You can often get edit
controllers that can sent signals to both LANC and Panasonic 5-pin editing
VCRs, which allows you to, say, edit Hi8 to S-VHS.
