#Opinion on Non-Linear

Hi,
I would like to ask this forum member's opinion on non-linear editing systems.
I have about $15,000 – $18,000 to spend on fully configured non-linear editing
system. Minimum output resolution of Betacam SP quality or better is a must
(750×480) .
"Please, I am not interested in 3/4", S-VHS or Hi-8 quality systems."
I've heard that Video Toaster/Flyer and New Media 100 for Power Mac
can meet such requirement at the price I described above. However I
would like to hear opinions from anyone whom have been using these
systems or know them well. Because I can't trust what their
advertisement claims. Thanks in advance for your response.

Hi Joseph –
When considering a system, be sure to look to the complete list of
your requirements. You'll find, as is the standard recommendation,
that the first step is to know what you want in features, ease-of-use
and speed and then make a chart with products that begin to fullfil
those items.
Although you have mentioned only two systems, they currently represent
several configurations with varying costs and vastly different
features. It is also significant to consider your time frame, as
Newtek announced the Windows version of the Flyer at NAB, and
anticipates delivery in July '95.
We are preparing a competitive list of all NLE systems to allow our
customers to make an informed selection, and would be glad to supply
you with that report. Initially, you may find that the only system
providing you with a complete editing environment, Beta SP quality,
and fast, professional output for under $20,000 is the Toaster/Flyer
system. For a preliminary report on those two systems and three
others, see the current issue of DV (Digital Video). It gives an
unbiased review of the video quality, features and costs of five
prominent NLE systems.
I anticipate the comparision report this week, so leave me an EMail reply if
you would like a copy.

Has anyone heard anything, pro or con, about the Plum nonlinear digital editor
from Interactive Images, Inc.?
I saw their demo at NAB. All vaporware and talk. They don't have a product to
sell. I would be concerned they will be out of business soon.
I agree that Plum at NAB was vaporware, but I wouldn't count them out just yet.
They could be bought by one of the big boys. If so, don't expect the same come
on price that Plum was promoted at this NAB.

Received a flyer from them date 4/27/95 that starts off –
"Where's that #$%&~$! video you asked for? – We're tempted to say,
"it's all in the software" (ever heard that before?), but we won't".
They go on to say that, despite outside pressure, they want the demo
video to be done with Plum (novel idea?) so it will be ready in two
weeks. So far they're not really late yet.
They also claimed to have taken 400 orders at NAB and I'm sure they'd
like to deliver them.
Further, a list of Q&A's states:
Plum will ship in July '95
PCI bus will support 5:1 compression which is BetaCam SP quality
No RAID required
Plum uses motion JPEG, variable 50:1 to 5:1.
With 5:21 ratio, you get 3.75 minutes per GB of disk
Current Config requirements:
100MHz Pentium PC or faster
Triton PCI chip set on MB
32 MB EDO DRAM Memory
256 Kbytes Synch Burst cache .. 512 KBytes is better
Adaptec 2940 PCI to SCSI controller (Fast and Wide with two drives+)
They will be showing Plum at InfoComm in Dallas 6/15-17 next.

What is InfoComm? If it's DTV stuff I live very close and would try to go
unless it's vendors only.
