#Lightwave vs Real 3D
18 messages in this thread
I'm interested in feedback from anyone who is a Real 3D and/or Lightwave user.
I'm considering purchasing one of the these products, and would like to hear
about the experience others have had in using one or the other on a PC/Windows
platform.
I have the demo version of Real 3D. As far as I know, there is no demo version
of Lightwave available.
I'm also interesting is knowing of any Lightwave distributors in the Southern
California area.
Thank,
Rick Quisenberry

You might get a more informed response if you post your questions about
Real3D vs LW in one of the AMIGA forums. Both programs have a longer history of
use on that platform. Over there you're more likely to find someone who's used
BOTH, and can offer a feature-for-feature comparison, if that's what you really
want. Is there a reason you're limiting yourself to just these two choices?

There are plenty of LW users in So. Cal. that would be more than happy
to show you all the bells and whistles, many meet at the Video Toaster User
Group (which you just missed yesterday unfortunately). To get on their mailing
list I believe you should talk to James Noack at 818-504-6337. Hopefully
someone (Stan?) will chime in here with more info.

Thanks, Tim.
Tim,
Honestly, I couldn't have said it better.
Except next time I need to get more sleep before I give a Flyer editing demo.

Stan,
Sorry I missed your demo. Saturday afternoon was my only opportunity to
go to E3. Pretty overwhelming! But lots of game devs that may need models in
the future. <heh, heh>

Tim,
I was beat. So you didn't miss much. I was up late the night before helping a
client with his Flyer. We finally got it working after 2 AM. Uggggghh!
Glad to hear E3 was cool, I tried to make it, but I have a couple of pretty
tight deadlines.
Cheers,
Stan

Hi. That's why we were late. (we had tardy slips) Did you see how the Alias
people had a development station directly hooked up to a Sega Saturn? 3D is the
gamers future. I wished our machines could render 250,000 shaded polys a sec.!

Joe,
If you have a 486 or P5 you might DL the “3D Model Viewer for
Windows'' in the ANVENA forum – NEW ANIM VENDOR library. It will give some idea
of the dramatic increase in rendering speed that's possible simply with some
better assembly programming. The Reality Lab 3D Viewer allows you to move and
rotate wireframe and Gouraud shaded objects in “realtime''. It makes a PC feel
almost like an SGI.

With the right hardware, they can. And it will get cheaper and cheaper. To
follow the boards available go to the truespace forum under graphics boards for
the last few days.

I did. Thanks for the tips. All we really want is texture painting on 3D
surfaces and shaded previews in real time. Looks like by the end of summer the
wait is over. A friend of mine was testing all the platforms for Lightwave and
concluded a Pentium 100 with WinNT was the best cluck for your buck at the
moment. I just have an aversion to Intel. I am hoping that the Mac Quickdraw 3D
and the release of NT for MAC would give me a way out. If Newtek could just
line up a few good programmers to stuff Lightwave with a few more plugins, they
could really take the lion's share of the market.

I thought the idea of plug-ins was to let third parties to develop amd make the
product richer. 😉
There is a build up of third party support gearing up already.
Metro Grafx will have Fiber factory ready in two weeks (Hair Generator)
Xaos Tools will have Penellio ready soon.
Dynamic Realities will have Impact ready in July
I heard Humanoid will be ported to LW soon.
Alan
Humanoid has been in release in LW format for a long time now (2-3
years?). They are, however, working on a (plug-in?) that will increase the
functionality of their already impressive models. If I were to guess
(since that's all I can do right now), I'd imagine that the potential
plug-in will work with the new inverse kinematic features of LW, allowing
scenes to be generated automatically based on user input.
Just a thought.

Stephen,
Thanks for bringing up Humanoid here.
>>Humanoid has been in release in LW format for a long time now (2-3 years?).<<
Not for PC, just for the Amiga. The files have to be reworked a little
for 4.0 PC users, because Win32 users still have to deal with 8 character file
names.

Good guesses. Although our software will be not be a “plug-in'' in the
most strict sense of the word, it is possible they'll support IK, and they'll
be offered on CD-ROM.

Can you put me on an E-mail list to let me know when it is finished?

Don't you think they could provide a small suite of them like the Arexx scripts
Arnie did…Hmmm "center" comes to mind, or how about "Text". I would find
modeling on a PC without them much less appealing than on the Amiga. I believe
none exist on the PreRelease and no on knows what will be included. That's why
I tend toward an Alpha or a dedicated Render. Did you see the Post that Escom
plans to Support POWERPC with WinNT, MacOS and AmigaDos in next year's
incarnation? Yeah!

Hell, you gave a great demo. Just your usual shy self. I am that much closer to
getting a Flyer now thanks to you. Prepare for some more really dumb questions
soon.
Thanks, Joe.
Actually, I was up very late helping another gentleman get his Flyer working.
Then got up early to finish the disk for the group. With a triple expresso to
prop the ole eye lids open. <G>
No problem. I don't think that any question is a dumb question. I am gonna take
your suggestion and make my segment in advance on video tape and just answer
questions in real time. <BG>
