Larry, The procedure you describe is for backing-up D/Print only with Marauder (per my phone with the Marauder people) and will only work with an NEC drive. D/Print cannot be backed up with the Mitsubishi drive using the Marauder program. This procedure should not be performed for other copies. BTW, my drive is an NEC and Marauder has worked perfectly for me in all cases.

How can you tell the difference in drives other than sitting there and taking it apart? Is there some sort of cue? If so, where?

press the "eject" button John. The Mitsubishi ones (later production) have a smooth resistance all the way in, instead of sort of "snapping" in. Hard to describe, but if you once feel the difference, you'll know forever.

Just look into the opening of your drive and if you see a brass rivet in the opening its an nec drive–if not, its from another supplier. Hope this helps.
