Well, I tried my 5 1/4" drive with the Amiga in Amiga mode today using the
new 1.2 KS and WB. Works just fine although obviously a little slower and
only holds 1/2 as much. There are a few things folks should know about the
software thou. 1st, the 5 1/4 doesn't automatically boot up with the
machine, you have to "mount" it. Then, the workbench doesn't recognize it
until you do something with it–that is, somehow or other access it. Since
you can't access it from the WorkBench, you have to go to CLI and then do a
directory or something similar, then go back to the WorkBench–the ICON will
then be there, and all will be well.
It can be "mounted" from the startup-sequence, and I suspect (but haven't
tried it yet) that doing a "cd df2:" and then a "cd df0:" in the
startup-sequence will bring the ICON into the window, haven't tried it yet,
but will let you all know when I do. Other than that little quirk (and the
need to tell the system when you change a disk–another CLI command), it
seems to work quite well! Don p.s. This is the Beta version of KS and WB
1.2, the final version may not have the above problems.
I tried wb beta 2 with a hacked up 5 1/4 inch drive that works fine under
TRANSFORMER. It doesn't seem to get recognized from 1.2 CLI, though. I did a
MOUNT df2: using the example moutlist with the name changed to df2: and
device changed to 2. A dir after that did not get me anywhere. Any
suggestions? <Fadi>
Humm…..that is what I did, I presume you left Mountlist in the Devs
directory of the SYS: disk and I am guessing that you got no prompt from the
system telling you it had trouble mounting df2:. Do a DISKCHANGE DF2: and
then try it, it should at least access the drive. If it does, you have to
format a new 5 1/4 disk and all should be well. It does not recognize the
IBM format. If that doesn't work, I can only guess that you are missing a
necessary line from the disk to the computer. I am using the Amiga 1020
drive, so don't have any experience with a "foreign" drive interfaced to the
Amiga.
The mountlist IS in the devs directory, and MOUNT does not give me an error
message. I then put in a blank disk and say DISKCHANGE DF2: and it gives me an
error. My drive runs fine in IBM mode. Oh well, another mystery added to my
list. Any suggestions?

If the error it gives you is "NOT A DOS DISK IN UNIT 2" then you have to
format the disk and it will recognize it. Also, when you modified the file
MOUNTLIST I presume you only changed the DF1: to a DF2: and the unit # from 1
to 2, but left flags alone (at 1). I see that you have the full 1.2 set (5
disks) so presume you also understand that you can't use IBM formated disks
in the 5 1/4 while in Amiga mode. This is for anyone else reading this
